Kingdom of Wessex 866-871 ADAlfred and his closest companions travelled to Kingston upon Thames, where they met with Deormund’s father, a close friend of the newly declared king, Aethelred. The choice of Kingston for his coronation made good sense. Having ruled over Kent, Aethelred selected this site, the location of a royal vill, for its convenient central position in the Wessex-ruled territory.
