Over the ensuing days, Harkell’s family was trained hard by the woodfolk to raise each other into the trees quietly on a moment’s notice. They were drilled over and over again, until they were ragged with tiredness. Each time, their choice of tree and direction was discussed; the type of tree, the height and strength of the branches, which side of the tree and its distance from the firesite if they were camped or from the trail if they were moving. Then adults and children had to practise remaining motionless and silent for extended periods of time.
Without their previous defensiveness, the woodfolk demonstrated their skill with weaponry, camouflage, approaching a target undetected and flicking into hiding, while Harkell and Danton explained the tactics that had been used against Jara
