Chapter 24“Typhoid Mary,” Lydia later learned, was a figure from Old Earth, Homo sapiens' planet of origin, now a gigantic archeological ruin devoid of life, rendered uninhabitable by its original occupants. The dissident Wrwrmrfn held as one of their basic tenets the belief that Homo sapiens was doing to the galaxy what they'd done to their planet of origin, fouling their own nest. Somehow Homo sapiens had managed to escape the planet before annihilating themselves.
Among the tales attributed to Old Earth was this Typhoid Mary, a Kitchen Maid in the households of primarily wealthier families. Her lack of simple hygiene had caused the spread of the salmonella typhi bacteria, the woman preparing food without washing her hands after contact with her own feces and urine.
