Hunger and smelly armpits caused her with much urgency to leave the scrolls and hurry to the shower. She came back dressed in jeans and an old T-shirt, taking large bites of the hunk of apple cake she had grabbed on her way through the kitchen. Thankfully Harriet had not returned. She suspected Phoebe had persuaded her to have lunch in Carlton, as she often did. Phoebe always had to be on the move and thought Harriet spent too much time in the Dandenongs. Which was true, for without her friend, Ginny doubted Harriet would venture further than the foothills. Ginny had just reached the end of the ninth scroll when she heard footsteps outside. It was the sudden entry, the shock on Harriet’s face at the sight of her presence in the space, the look as if she, the daughter, were an interloper
