Duke de Guise received his spies, Bertrand and Monaud, at his Paris house on their return from La Rochelle. He shook their hands warmly and a wide smile indicated his pleasure to see them, even before they had recounted their visit. “Well met! I assume that your expedition has borne fruit?” Bertrand slapped the saddle bag draped over his arm, “All in here, Your Grace, as requested by my Lady,” he answered, reciprocating his officer’s smile. “Excellent, and there will be time to examine your work but, first, we will sup ale in the tavern. I know how to treat my men and I’m sure you have a thirst.” “Don’t need asking twice!” Monaud guffawed. The ale flowed freely, and paid for by the duke. He knew, from experience, the value of creating a bond with his troops. “Fill it up, landlord!”
