Chapter Nine
The scream spurred the three investigators into action. Molly stopped long enough to grab one of the portable monitors and then, with Colin leading the way, they ran out of the kitchen and made for the staircase. Colin raced up the stairs and, as he reached the upper landing, a light came on, and he saw William and Celia emerging from their bedroom.
“Did you hear that?” he called.
“Yes,” replied William, “it came from Jennifer’s room.” Colin stood back to allow Jennifer’s parents to climb the stairs to the girl’s attic room. Molly and Sarah waited with him at the bottom of the small staircase.
From above, they could hear the sound of the little girl sobbing uncontrollably.
