The day of Lord Ædmunde and Lady Mildrethe’s wedding dawned. Helgha looked out of the door of the cottage she shared with Beatrix and grimaced. The sky was leaden overhead. She hoped, for Lord Ædmunde’s sake, it didn’t rain. The villagers all came out to see Lord Ædmunde get married. Helgha stood next to Beatrix as Lady Mildrethe walked toward the church. She was accompanied by her father and the rest of her family. Helgha watched as they approached the church, scrutinising the woman who was to be Lord Ædmunde’s wife and the new Lady. The bride wore a pale blue underdress with a darker blue overdress, belted at the waist with a leather belt. In spite of the cool, overcast day, she wore no cloak. Her dark hair had been plaited, and those plaits ringed her head. Hmm. She’s fairly pretty.
