Helgha sat in the cave mouth, brooding. Although she thought about what Liv said, her mind kept returning to her stolen baby. Biorn woke and looked around. “Where’s Hartvigg?” This triggered Helgha’s tears. Liv took the little boy aside. “It was the wolf, Biorn. The one who came before. He was hungry. He crept into the cave while we slept. Hartvigg was the smallest of us and one who could not fight back."
