By the time Sandra Collins stepped into Anna McCaughley's home an hour later, the detective was long gone.
The silence greeting them after her people kicked in the front door told her as much. No doubt the detective suspected they were coming here after she and Doctor Ellis eluded capture earlier. Sandra crossed the foyer and paused in the middle of the living room. By the disarray, she guessed the policewoman's departure was a hasty one and most likely extended.
