CHAPTER FOURTEEN It might have been better to run to Rosie’s house. Charlotte dropped her car keys going down the steps and had to rummage around in the dirt for them. Then she backed out to the street forgetting to pull the roller door down and locking it, so parked and hurtled back to do it. As desperate as she was to reach Rosie, leaving anything unlocked made her uneasy. She pulled in front of Rosie’s place and remembered to turn the lights off and lock the car before racing through the gate. Hand raised to knock, she noticed the door was ajar. Rosie needed to be more vigilant. She pushed it open. “Rosie? It’s Charlotte.” There was no answer. Charlotte went cold and stepped inside. “Rosie, where are you?” She closed the front door and locked it. The lights were all on but no Rosie.
