CHAPTER FIVE
“It feels quiet today.” Rosie dusted a set of shelves. “Not many people in.” She dusted them again.
“The town is quiet. Hardly any cars but I guess it isn’t even ten yet.” Charlotte stared out of the window she’d been cleaning. The storm had come and gone overnight, leaving a fresher day with less humidity. “And so many people said they were going away for these couple of weeks, before school begins.”
“True. But still.”
A car slowed and both women looked at it. Charlotte hoped there might be customers inside. Anything to break them out of the mantle of exhaustion and sadness. But it kept going.
“Um. I phoned Trevor last night.” Charlotte decided she should say something about it.
