Chapter Seventeen
Scout had to continually slow her steps as she led Anne-Elliott out to pasture. The broodmare was twenty-one years old, far past the age that a horse should be carrying. But her former owner had been a greedy, uncaring woman. She'd only looked at the horse as a cash cow, or rather cash horse. After the last pregnancy, the Animal Welfare League had stepped in. But it had been too late to prevent this pregnancy.
They'd brought Anne-Elliott to the Silver Star Ranch when they realized the mare was with her twelfth calf. It was going to be a rocky birth, but the horse had the two best women for the job. Scout and Saylor would help the old gal through the birth every step of the way. And the best part was that the former owner would see no profit from it.
