CHAPTER THREE“May I speak to you, señor?”
Ramón de Lopez looked up from the newspaper he was reading to find Cañuela standing at his side.
He had not heard her come in.
As he looked at her, he realised that she was nervous.
“But of course, Miss Gray,” he replied. “What can I do for you?”
“You asked me yesterday, señor,” Cañuela replied, “if I would come to Buenos Aires with you.”
“And you refused me very positively.”
“I-I have – changed my mind, I will come if you still – want me.”
“Of course I want you. I made that very clear.”
There was a pause and then Cañuela said in a low voice,
“But if I – come, I shall require a sum of – two hundred pounds to be paid before I leave England.”
