Chapter FiveThere was a long silence.
Then the Marquis enquired as if he deliberately changed the subject,
“Who frightened you?”
He saw Linetta’s fingers tremble before she answered,
“When we were at the theatre tonight a – friend of Mr. Bischoffsheim came and sat in the box. He asked me out to dinner and I did not – realise that I had accepted his invitation until it was too – late to refuse.”
“Who is he?” the Marquis enquired.
“Mr. Vossin – he is a Banker.”
“I have heard of him.”
The Marquis actually knew that Jacques Vossin was not only a Banker of some repute but also a man who had financial interests all over the world.
He could understand that Blanche, and certainly Mr. Bischoffsheim, would think it an honour and an opportunity for Linetta that he should wish to entertain he
