CHAPTER FIFTEEN Dreams haunted Charlotte’s sleep. Images of brides drifting through the forest as though carried on a breeze, their faces covered by veils. She chased one then another, reaching out to touch them, to ask their name, but never fast enough. One led her to the clearing and circled the grave, which was flowerless. The bride laid her bouquet on it. As she straightened, she began to remove her veil… Charlotte sat bolt upright, the covers falling away and her heart beating fast. Light crept through the part open curtains. Early morning. She forced herself to take deep breaths until the panic subsided. A dog barked close by, and then another. Excited barks. Charlotte slipped into her dressing gown and padded to the third bedroom, rubbing her eyes. A police car and a crime unit
