CHAPTER FOURThe next morning Silva dressed hurriedly and at half past seven went along to the Duke’s bedroom. She knew that today of all days he would breakfast early. She then knocked on the door and his valet, Harper, opened it. “Good morning, Harper,” Silva said. “Can I speak to His Grace.” “I’m sure you can, Miss Silva,” Harper said. He smiled at her as he spoke. Like all the other servants, he believed that she was badly treated and so they were kinder to her than they would have been otherwise. Then aloud he called out sharply, “Then send her in and shut the door.”
