Author's NoteAlthough this story is obviously fantasy, some of it is based on truth. Alisdair Mor Mac an Righ, Big Alisdair, son of the king, did exist, and was known as the Wolf of Badenoch or, less colourfully, as Big Alexander. From the 30th March 1371, he was the Lord of Badenoch, that beautiful country of hills and valleys just south of Moray in Scotland, and from this powerbase he extended his grasp to control much of northern Scotland.
When his half brother, King Robert II created him Earl of Buchan, Alistair was the most powerful man in the north of Scotland, excepting, perhaps, the Lord of the Isles, but because of the manner of his rule he was undoubtedly the most feared.
In June 1382 he married Euphemia, Countess of Ross, who unfortunately failed to produce a legitimate heir.
