Chapter Nine Wilkes’ journey back to base was nowhere near as joyful as the one into London. The roads were much quieter, but it’d take much more than that to pick up his mood. He wasn’t grumpy, exactly, but floated in some kind of weird melancholy-yet-happy place. The melancholy came from leaving Balkhi behind—albeit only until the following Friday—and the happy part stemmed from all the memories he’d made in the past couple of days.
