As they stood there, the air between them seemed to vibrate with tension. Rose could feel the weight of Max's gaze on her, like he was seeing right through to her soul. She took a step closer to him, her heart pounding in her chest. Max didn't move, but his eyes seemed to burn with intensity. "I feel like I've known you my whole life," Rose said, her voice barely above a whisper. Max's expression softened, and he reached out to brush a strand of hair behind her ear.
