The workday ended, and Sarah and Carter headed home together, their usual commute offering a familiar and comfortable rhythm. However, today, a persistent worry disturbed Sarah’s peace. She couldn’t shake the snippet of conversation she’d overheard between Allie and her ex-brother-in-law, Jesse. Allie seemed visibly stressed, and Sarah’s curiosity—and protective instinct—was heightened. She wanted to ask Allie for details, but during their shared Wing Stop meal, Allie had been a master of deflection, acting as if the tense phone call had never occurred.
Carter glanced over, his eyes softening as he saw the furrow in her brow. “What’s on your mind, Love? You’ve been quiet since we hit the highway. Lost in space?”
