Chapter 40 In the dark of the morning, a policeman patrolling the vicinity of Armley Gaol saw a man slouching slowly along. He passed the policeman, and a quarter of an hour later the officer observed him coming back again and challenged him. He was a wild-looking man, unshaven, white-faced, sack-eyed.
