1670 Parole

He said: 'What do you want Starata?' Starata drew on his cigarette. He smiled at Callaghan. He said: 'You couldn't guess, could you?' His voice was pleasant. Callaghan said: 'That warehouse job?' Starata nodded. 'That's right,' he said. He leaned back in his chair. 'You know, Slim,' he said, I've been pretty successful most of my life, and not because I'm particularly clever. There's another reason.' Callaghan said: 'I suppose I have to evince interest and ask what the reason is. All right. What is it?' Starata shrugged his shoulders. 'You're a tough egg, aren't you?' he said. 'You wouldn't give a guy a chance.' Callaghan said: 'Why should I? But you were explaining the reason why you'd been successful.' Starata said: 'If I've had any success it's because I know my limitations.'
