Then the knight and squire took leave of all those who had accompanied them. But their mistresses were so upset and wept so bitterly that the squire very nearly stayed. He consoled his mistress by promising her that he would return shortly. They both left carrying the lighted candles which had been given them, and fearlessly began their long journey towards daylight. Suddenly their candles extinguished themselves and they had no means of reigniting them. However, during their journey back to the surface they neither saw nor heard any of the dangers that they had encountered on their way there. When they eventually emerged from the cave, they descended the mountain and made their way to Rome as rapidly as they could. The knight, struck to the heart for having offended Our Lord for so long,
