"Precisely," said Guelvada. "To me she seems the sort of lady who was made for Ernie. But," he continued, "never do I put pleasure before business— well, not so that you'd notice it. But I can understand this Callao being attracted to her. Probably Callao is now more or less financially secure. He has this band playing in London. He is probably earning good money. For once in his life he can permit himself to feel a little altruistic about women." He looked at Frewin sideways. "You know," he went on, "usually he takes women for everything they have.
