Aria howls as I run through the woods. ‘Go back,’ she pleads, trying to take control.

‘No,’ I argue. ‘We vowed never to have another mate. Why are you breaking your promise?’

‘It’s different this time,’ She pleads. ‘Go back.’

I push her to the back of my mind as I slow my pace. I realize my mate hasn’t come after me, so I stop running. I make my way out of the woods and walk along the road towards my cabin. A red truck slows down, and a window lowers.

“Hey, Sam,” James, the guard greets me. “What are you doing out here?”

“Oh, just walking,” I mutter.

“Anywhere in particular?” He laughs.

“Just home,” I reply.

“Want a ride?” He smiles softly.

I take a deep breath. “Sure, " I say. I hop into the truck and lean against the window.
