Chapter nineteenThe street roared and crackled with the discharge of elemental energy. Massive gobbets and gouts of flame splashed the walls. The noise racketed on like demented giants hammering iron against granite mountains. Sound and heat and light shrouded me in suffocating coils.

“Deb-Lu!” I screamed it out as I dived for the nearest doorway. “Deb-Lu! Go home — Now!”

My sorcerer comrade might be here only as an illusion, a ghostly representation of himself; the powers unleashed here could reach through the lupal projection and kill him as surely as though he stood here in person. At least, that is what I believed. The door came up and struck me shrewdly in the back as I rolled over in the doorway. I twisted about to stare back into the street.
