Jacob wasn't smiling anymore. His eyes hardened making it seem like those ocean eyes could freeze anyone if he stared at them long enough.

I shuddered. Things wouldn't be easy now and it was quite obvious that this was going to be an uncomfortable conversation. My eyes moved from his face to my hands as I played out different scenarios in my head of how I thought this would end.

“I’m listening,” Jacob said, jolting me out of my reverie.

Clearing my throat, I focused my eyes on my hands like I was reading from a script. “Your dad... is his name Samuel?” I asked first.

“Yes.” His answer was rushed and from his tone, I could tell that he was losing his patience.

“Okay,” I continued. I flexed my fingers and let out a breath.

This time I looked up and faced Jacob squarely. “He said he had
