Chapter 1
Chapter 1 The hopes or dreams Sophia Elizabeth Brady once had were gone, and she'd only just turned eighteen. Her future was a fearful thing now. She had heard about Newgate as a young girl and the horrors that dwelled there. People went in but never came out. Prisoners were treated horribly, and disease ran rampant. England had many prisons or gaols, as they were better known, but Newgate was the most notorious of all. And here Sophia sat in the middle of it. Never in her wildest dreams would she have believed she would one day be locked in a communal cell twenty feet long and fifteen feet wide, along with twenty-five other men, women, and children. Their only light came from small windows, built near the ceiling, and covered by metal grating. Any available fresh air stayed at the top. A few lanterns burned but proved useless. Off the large room were two smaller rooms, one of the areas for the women and one for the men. A few chamber pots and buckets lined the walls. In the three days Sophia had been there the rooms had not been cleaned. Most prisoners sat with their backs against the block walls. Others tried to sleep on the hard floor covered by filthy, matted hay. Sophia scanned the prison cell. A rat scurried across the floor, forcing her to curl her legs up. She pressed against the dank wall. The small boy and girl lying next to her for warmth stirred in their sleep. Looking down on them, she was filled with compassion. She stretched her skirt over them in an attempt to keep them warm. Leaning her head back and closing her eyes, Sophia tried to deny her surroundings. She couldn't be here. She would wake up, and it would be a horrible nightmare lingering only in her memory. But her other senses proclaimed the reality of her situation. The smell of mildew, vomit, and human waste mixed with the scent of dirty bodies overwhelmed her. Words from her past came to soothe and comfort. "All right, Sophia, hold on. Hold on tight to what ya believe and who ya are." They were the words of her beloved Gran, who could always ease Sophia's mind whenever she felt frightened. But now she needed more than words. She longed for her home for Papa and Gran. Just then the great iron doors opened, and the gaoler mercilessly shoved a stout woman through them, causing her to sprawl facedown on the floor. A "whuff" came out of her. She lay motionless until the gaoler closed the doors. Slowly lifting her head, she scanned the cell with fiery eyes, like a trapped animal. With dark hair speckled with gray, she appeared to be in her midforties and looked like she had lived a hard life. The children jerked awake and started whimpering. Sophia put her arm around them reassuringly.  A man said something crude to the older woman while others snickered, then grabbed the woman. With a growl the woman reached up, pinching the man in the most sensitive of areas and twisting with all her might. The two of them rolled, kicking and swearing. With one good push the man freed himself. "All right, ye old cow. If that's the way you want it!" "Ya ever try an' touch me again, ya stinkin' scum, and ol' Mary will c***k yer "ead!" she screamed back. Laughter erupted at her words. "Ye better listen to the ol' girl, Pete, or we'll be diggin' your grave!" quipped another man. The woman got to her feet facing the group of men. With her hands stretched into claws she braced herself for another attack. She wouldn't win, but she would take a few down and leave a scar or two. "Ah, she ain't worth it, Pete," another man piped up. "Besides, there be better tastin' fish in 'ere than that ol' whale." With that said, all the men turned to eye Sophia. The children pushed themselves flatter against the wall, clinging to each other as Sophia slowly stood. Her heart tore at her ribs as her knees threatened to buckle. Two of the men stepped closer. The dark one with matted beard led while the man with brown hair sneered at her, showing broken, black teeth. Their stench washed over them and anyone else near. The older woman ran to Sophia, standing in front of her. "Why, ya filthy blokes! It be not enough to grab poor ol' Mary, is it? Ya gotta try and put the hurt to this wee lass besides! Well, I ain't 'avin it, ya 'ear me?" Sophia was surprised at the sudden fear on the men's faces. She followed their gaze until it fell on the giant of a man standing behind Mary. Big Red, as the men called him, stood head and shoulders above the rest. His expression caught and held their attention. Without a word the men stepped back as their laughter died in their throats. The older woman straightened and smiled. "Ya blokes learn'd, did ya? Ol' Mary don't take nothin' from scum like ya. It be best ya learn it now if we be locked togethet in this 'ole of Satan's!" Once the men were seated, Red returned to "his" corner. Sophia was amazed how quietly he moved in spite of his size. Even though no words were spoken, the men heard Red loud and clear. There would be no more trouble of that kind with him in the cell. Mary stood without seeing the large man standing behind her. Pushing her large bosoms up proudly, she straightened her crumpled dress. Brushing her hair away, she proceeded to put her arm around the young woman. "No need for ya to worry, lass. Mary won't let them scruffs touch ya in any way. Ya be safe with me 'ere." Sophia felt lightheaded. Slowly she slid against the wall to the floor. Sitting next to her, the older woman turned a wary eye on the bunch of foulers, just in case they needed another lesson.
