Aelric Prence has wandered the world for a long time, patiently watching the world change before him. Decades slipping by as he looks for his Apprentice. His teacher had long ago told him he was waiting on a very special child. He's restless, getting impatient, and tired of waiting. Aelric is convinced he is looking for a male, aged 10, like him his brothers had been when their teachers found them... he couldn't have been more wrong.

Elisapeth Lawrence has always been a loner. As an infant she was abandoned to a church, no clues left as to her identity, except a pendant necklace. A beautiful Emerald the size of a quarter and shaped like a tear drop, surrounded on either side with four small rubies. She has been searching for clues to her identity her entire life, always coming up empty handed. Going to a job interview she has no idea that she is about to find all the answers she has spent her life searching for. Or the danger she is about to face just for being born.

Aelric Prence
I watch with a scowl through my office windows as Sheila, the secretary from hell, gathers her belongings and shoves them into a box. I'm pissed. She's crying, face red, and mascara running. This is the third secretary in four months. I don't understand women from this age. I do not understand their incessant need to marry and spit out a bunch of snot nosed children, especially when they try to land their boss as baby daddy. I tried to ignore her heated looks, the "accidental" touches, and the not so subtle hints she would be willing to trade in her job for a place warming my bed. It's been three weeks, I thought she would take the hint. That was sadly not the case. Today she cornered me in the break room pressing her fake t**s against my chest, running her claws up my thigh. I barely restrained the urge to toss her across the room. I quickly removed her hands from me and told her she was dismissed. I do not need a women to complicate things. I need my Apprentice. I pull the bottle of scotch out of my desk and pour a hefty glass.  Let me introduce myself. My name is Aelric, I am a nine hundred year old sorcerer, Nine hundred and thirty two to be precise. As far as I know, I am the last remaining sorcerer from my time. My Master Oleric died in 1416 battling to stop Josef, once our brother and fellow sorcerer. Josef was seduced to the dark side of magic by an enchantress named Alixon. Together they sought to take all sorcerers powers and use them to take control of the world. Oleric and I destroyed the enchantress and stole the pendant she used to steal powers. As Oleric cast his final spell to destroy Josef, he told me to wander the land until the year 2020. If I stopped then, in a city called Phoenix, I would find my apprentice. As he finished the spell, a ball of energy as dark as the night sky, shot from his hands and struck Josef in the chest. The rebounding energy flung me through the air, sending me hundreds of feet away, taking my breath away as I slammed into the ground with a dull thud. When I could finally get to my feet, both of them were gone. I was the last sorcerer that I knew of, so I did as Oleric asked, I wandered the lands until 2010. When I couldn't take it any more, the need to keep busy overwhelming, I headed to Phoenix early and started a small security business. I recruited only 5 of the best retired SEALS. In ten years word of mouth has overwhelmed the business, leading me to hire additional men and expand the company. We now have 30 teams of 5 men. All are specially trained military veterans. I sigh as I realize this means going through the hiring process yet again. More fake professionals trying to find a wealthy boss to fall for them. I scoff at the thought.  Picking up the phone I call Fran, the head of our Human Resources department to fill her in on the circumstances with Sheila. She outright laughs down the receiver as I explain that yet again, my secretary is more interested in a husband than a job.  "I'll set up interviews for tomorrow afternoon. How does 12-3 work for you?" she says, and I can hear the humor in her voice. So glad she finds my suffering hilarious I think. "Fine." I bark out. I know she has no control over the women the temp agency sends over so I try to hold my temper. "Be sure to use a different temp agency, I don't want an agency that keeps sending over wives to be instead of the secretary I am looking for." "Yes Sir." she says, which is quickly followed by full fledged laughing as she hangs the phone up. I leave the office then, though its not nearly time for the day to be over. I can't help it, I'm feeling restless. I'm tired of waiting for my apprentice. Every sorcerer has to find and train one apprentice. The apprentice will show themselves to their Master. In all my time I've never heard of a Sorcerer not crossing their apprentice in 900 years. They almost always show themselves to us by the time we are 300 years old. The oldest on record before me was 436 years. That record has gone now. The level of power has changed as well. In all my traveling I haven't come across a sorcerer that was older than 500 years and none that can come close to me in power. It makes me wonder if something went wrong with Oleric's spell. The longer I wait the more I doubt. As I exit the building I feel a change in the air. I get into the waiting black SUV and tell Macks to head to the house. I have a penthouse in the city for when I have early meetings, but I need to let off some steam tonight. I cant do that here. My house outside the city is in the middle of the desert. No one would be around for miles, and I would be able to let my energy fly. Macks my Driver is not a sorcerer but he knows what I am. I saved his life some years ago and he's been a loyal friend and employee since.  "Lets go home Macks" I say as he pulls into traffic. I watch the scenery pass and think of my apprentice. Will he be stronger because its taking so long? Or will it be more complicated and almost impossible to train him because its taking so long? I feel my mood growing more and more somber the further we travel out of the city.  "Everything ok Ael?" Macks asks, looking at me in the rear view mirror. "I had to fire Shelia. She literally tried to rape me on break today. Its been getting worse for weeks but I didn't want to go through the mess of finding another secretary. I have enough on my plate without worrying about waking up to my secretary in my bed." I say. "To the barn?" he asks already knowing what my reply will be. "To the barn." I tell him.   Nothing more needs said as we pull into the driveway and make the ten minute drive out to the barn. When we pull up outside he parks the SUV and heads in. 20 minutes later he exits with Yin and Yang. My two American Paint Horses, they have beautiful markings in brown and white, they are twins and the markings  on them identical, just reversed. Mirror twins. Once we've gotten them saddled up, we head out on my favorite trail. We do not speak as we start our ride, I love it here in the desert. Especially at night time when I can see the stars. I love to lay on the ground and watch the stars just before I release all of my pent up energy. Soon we come around a curve in the trail and I see the rock formation I'm looking for. As we approach the formation, I get off of Yin and lay down on the ground. I gaze at the bright stars and release my frustration, clear my head, and center myself. I take four deep breaths and then stand up slowly. Concentrating on the built up energy, I slowly start to twirl my hands in small circles. A small ball of green energy forms in my palms, and soon I feel the energy strengthen in my hands. I start to move my hands faster, more tightly, and closer against the ball of energy. The faster my hands spin it, the bigger the ball gets. I pull out on the edges of the energy with my fingers and watch as the ball grows from softball size to basketball size. I take a deep breath, look at the rocks in front of me and release the ball. When the ball hits the rocks a basketball sized hole explodes and litters the earth with small shards of rocks. I repeat this process a second time, only this time my energy ball is a deep blue, almost purple. Oleric once told me the color of our energy is tied to our emotions. Green being frustration or envy. I envy sorcerers who have found their apprentice. Deep Blue is loneliness. I am lonely. Not only will my apprentice be my student, they will become my companion for the future. It has been 604 years since Oleric. 604 years of being alone.  I spend an hour releasing ball after ball, destroying the rocks. When I release the last ball we head out back to the barn. We lead Yin and Yang into the barn and remove the saddles, I take a brush and begin to brush down Yin after our ride. Its almost therapeutic and keeps my mind clear. When we are done caring for the horses we climb back in the SUV and drive another 20 minutes down the driveway. When we finally get home all I can think of is a shower and bed. Having to do the interviews tomorrow, I canceled all of my meetings and can sleep in at least for a while. We enter the house and I climb the stairs to my master bedroom, I walk in the room peeling off my clothes as I go, not bothering to pick them up at the moment. I start the shower and turn it to almost scalding before stepping in, as I stand there letting the water rinse the day away I give one last thought to finding my apprentice. I have to fill my secretary position before I can worry about finding him, I need to know things at work are taken care of before I can worry about that. I shut the water off and grab a towel. I don't bother with clothes as I fall onto my bed and drift off to sleep. The last thought that crosses my mind is that I hope this new temp agency knows what they are doing.
