I sat outside of Mama's Magic Shop, my heart beating fast and the humidity intensifying by the second. It had been years since I visited the busy streets of the French Quarter, let alone felt the nostalgic pull of the Louisiana culture. You can do this. You can do this. I coached myself before reaching for the silver door handle, pulling the latch, and stepping out into the heated southern air. I walked around the front of the car, standing face to face with my home. Mama got new windows put on the place, getting rid of those dingy burglary bars that hooked over them. Her new sign dangled above the door, swaying back and forth in the slight breeze. I could already smell the incense burning from the inside, a slight smile grew upon my face. I pushed the door open, revealing the new and improved shop. Everything was much more organized than before. She had specific shelves and labeling put into place that allowed everything to be easily found. She had replaced the khaki carpet with brown hardwood floors that accented the white fixtures, giving the place a more professional glow. I walked along, admiring the mason jars full of the different remedies and concoctions. The whirring of the ceiling fan made me realize how quiet it was. It was never this quiet. " Welcome to......Valencia Renee, that you? " her soothing voice calmed my anxiety immediately. She was even more beautiful than I remember. Her mocha complexion glowed against the monochromatic room as she rushed over to me, taking me tightly in her arms. Her sweet smell of cinnamon filled my nostrils. " Hey Tee Triece, how ya' doin'? " she pulled away from me, smiling, showing off her single gold tooth. " Gir', I'm good. You jus' get in? " she asked, tossing her long curly hair back over her shoulder. " Yes ma'am, I did. Where Mama? " " She jus' left fo' the market ta' pick up some thangs. " she stared at me, her smile never fading. " You jus' as beautiful as you wanna' be, Vee. " " Me, what 'bout you? " I complimented her. " You out hea' lookin' younga' than me. " She blushed. " Chi', you only say that when you want sumn', na' what is it? " " You made some pound cake? " I leaned in, asking lowly. " Baked fresh this moanin'. " she hooked her arm to mine as she escorted me to the kitchen. She lifted the top off the glass dish, revealing the sponge delight adorned with the white glaze. She sliced into it, placing the cake on a white saucer and then sitting it down in front of me. " Thank ya'. " I shook my head, breaking off a piece and popping it into my mouth. " Mmm. " " You missed this, huh? " she sat down in the chair, resting her elbows on the table and I nodded. " How school goin'? " " Pretty good. One of my recent papers made me wanna' come back home. " I continued to munch on the cake. " What 'bout? “ " Well, I grew up 'round voodoo and realized I don't kno' much 'bout it. " I started. " I ain't interested in the magic, but questions like did it start with you and mama, or with grandma? " " Vee, don't go diggin' too deep. " the look she gave me might suggest there was much I didn't know. Hell, it DID tell me that I don't know the half of the story. " Yo' mama kno' this? " " I ain't tell 'er I was comin' down. " I trailed off the sentence. She chuckled. " You tryna' get all us on that witch's ugly side. " she walked out of the kitchen and returned with what looked like a big black binder. She had already begun shuffling through it before handing it to me. " If yo' mama ask, you was feelin' nostalgic and stumbled on it, okay? " I chuckled, nodding my head and taking the photo album from her. I shuffled through the pictures, laughing at the memories. Pictures of my mother and my Aunt Triece at the family home. The large white estate sitting proudly in the background. I shuffled through more pictures, stumbling upon some from my earlier birthday parties. I picked up the book to take a closer look but was distracted by the sound of something hitting the floor. I looked down at the old polaroid photo of my mother, Aunt Triece, and a younger male. Underneath the photo read: Sid's 8th Birthday, '96. I turned the photo around and there was an address written on the textured paper. " Renee? " my mother's sudden call caused me to flinch, and the photo went back from my hand to the floor. " Hey, Mama? " I pushed the chair back, looking for it but not being able to find it. " Well don't jus' sit thea', come and give yo' mama a hug. " she placed the brown sacs down, rushing over to me and hugging me. Tightly. " Uh, Mama, I-I can't breathe. " " Hush, chi'. " she pulled away, retreating to the kitchen. " Na', why you ain't say you was comin' down? " " I jus' wanted it to be a surprise, that's all. " I told her as Tee Treice walked into the kitchen, grabbing the items from the bags. " You get the tea tree? " she asked my mother. " Guh, you ask me one mo' time? " she pointed at her. " I wouldn't have to if you listened the firs' time. " Tee Triece rolled her neck, walking inside the pantry. " You losin' weight, Mama. " I smiled at her fit but still thick figure. " Yea, baby. I see LA done you well. " she looked at me up and down, taking in how wide my hips were and how full my breasts were. " You done had a baby? " " Na, I would tell you if I had a baby. " I laughed. " Well you lef' a twig, Vee, and na' you is a woman. " my mother snapped her fingers. " God, what we eatin'? " " Homemade chicken pot pies. " she danced. I looked at the large number of ingredients she had purchased. " Who the hell you feedin', all of Bourbon street? " there was a laugh coming from the pantry followed by my mother rolling her eyes. " We got a meetin' here tonigh' for The Zanabi. " that was the name of her coven. " I need you out the way, Vee. " " Don't you always. " I mumbled. " Gir', don't make me take off my shoe. " she gave me a sharp look. " Na get yoself' settled in. " I rushed out of the kitchen, walking back into the heat to grab my bags from the trunk of my car. I walked back inside to the back of the shop and then left, up the stairs. This part hadn't changed one bit. Mama still had that tacky green wallpaper plastered everywhere. I shook my head, walking down the long hallway to the last door. I walked inside to the cool air of my old room. My mahogany dresser still looked new and the sheets lying across the queen-sized bed were fresh. I could smell the fabric softener igniting the room. I tossed my suitcase onto the bed, grunting before I unzipped it and revealed the clothes. I began unpacking the clothes, looking at myself in the empty mirror walk back and forth between the bed and the dresser. I tucked away one drawer, opening another and starting all over again. I reached for the last stack of folded clothes before turning back to the mirror. Stuffed in the top left-hand corner was that picture. I sat the clothes down, walking over and gently removing it from the wedge between the wood and the glass. I looked at the words again, then flipped it over. GO HERE was written in red ink and bold letters. How the hell could this have been placed here? I had been looking at this mirror the past five minutes and it's been bare this entire time. " Renee, getcho' butt down hea', they wanna' see you! " my mother yelled upstairs. " Comin'! "
