CHAPTER ONE
“The box are all loaded in.” Kate Coleman shouted towards her father. Who carries suitcases from her dorm room? Kate Coleman just graduated from college where she graduated with the degree of English Literature, she wanted to be an Editor someday which at first her father disapproved he would’ve wanted her to take up Economics but due to her persuasiveness he went with it, with also a few conditions, like calling him every night, letting him know where she would be going and who she’s with. It is a bit suffocating and she complained about it but as the time goes by she came to an understanding with her overly protective father, she grew with only her father raising her and being raised by a cop is tough always in a constant look out and also being alert at all time.             When Kate was just a little, around one to two years old her Aunt Karen took over on taking care of her when the work of her Dad, Chief Coleman was just climbing his way to the top of the Police Department and as hectic as ever, with late nights in the office and even going out in the streets at the middle of the night. Somebody has to take care of young Kate, so her Aunt volunteer to do the job. Her Aunt Karen is his father’s younger sister, she was still young when she took the responsibility and until now she was never married nor had any long term partner, a few dates here and there but not to last until the altar. Now at fifty she adored her aunt Karen so much treating her like a real mother. When Kate started to go to school she would start asking questions about her real mother, often she saw her classmates being fetched by their mothers and often they would tease her by not having one, at first she doesn’t understand the concept about the whole thing but it hurts her feelings that she doesn’t have one, although there’s her Aunt but still, she was her Aunt and not her mother. There was this one day when her father went home from work she climb into his lap as his defeated body deflated in their living room couch and immediately asked him about her mother, that took Chief Coleman by surprise because he can’t recall any incident that they ever talked about her, not in her presence of course. He thinks she still don’t understand that kind of topic, he’s deeply into his thoughts when she asked again, then he told her that her mother had died a few months after she was born and that was it, she did not bother asking again. When she reached Grade school there was a sudden feeling of emptiness she felt inside her that she somehow couldn’t have understood, then she knew it was the lack of a mother in her life, she was sure her Aunt sufficed the absence but still whenever she went into sleepovers, and but only within the lane they’re living meaning the house next to theirs of within a walking distance from their home and no further. She felt a little jealousy when she saw the mothers of her friends would tucked them in at night or the way they would gestures towards their daughter. Her Aunt Karen would tuck her in but not like what other mothers would do, she love her dearly but questions still keeps popping in her mind about her mother. Then one night during dinner she brought the topic to them asking again about her mother, this time she received the same story but with an added story that her mother got sick and that she’s brought in the hospital and there’s nothing they could do to get her better and she died days after and that’s was it nothing more. She wanted to know more about her or what she’s like but she kept fighting the urge to ask fearing that maybe they will get annoyed at her for always asking. When she’s about to graduate senior year when they were buying groceries she and her Aunt Karen she asked her, she saw the hesitation and fear in her Aunt’s face and she was sure there was a streak of sweat fell from her forehead down her cheeks then that’s when she got suspicious about the possibility of them hiding something from her, but she answered her with the same story she heard through all those years of asking and nothing more. She’s very curious about her but there is nothing she could get from them then eventually she gave up asking them and just assumed that it was the truth or probably it was the truth because the story is a constant one. I mean how can she doubt her own family, families don’t lie to each other that’s the law inside their home, no lies, no secrets and always rely on your family. Whenever she went to summer camp those are the words her father would always say to her before getting on the bus towards the camp and she would call every night and updated them about her day. That’s the world she knew and that’s will ever be, during college it was her first time dating that was second year in college when she took home a boy from her class during thanksgiving, her Aunt Karen was very excited about it because she kept on telling her about him almost every day when she’s not busy or had no deadlines for a project. They would always talked about boys, growing up she’s like her best friend more than an Aunt and Kate tell her everything. During that eventful evening her aunt was very happy as well as Kate but Chief Coleman was like looking at a murderer interrogating him and staring straight at him like throwing daggers at his face. Kate talked to him that night and asked him to just be gentle with him, he explained to her that he was just looking out for her best interest and there something in that boy that doesn’t sit right with him. Whenever he will say those words “doesn’t sit right” he was always right, probably a cop’s intuition but she brushed off the thought because he was her first real boyfriend and she really liked the boy then a few weeks after that he broke her heart by cheating on her with her dorm mate, she caught them having s*x in their dorm room.             That day she was shattered into pieces and ran back home even it is a two hours’ drive, thankfully it was her Aunt who opened the door and not her father or else the situation would be bloody by the time her father went home from work she was already calmed down and told him she broke up with him and she was glad that he did not asked any further question, that’s what he wants after all from the day he stepped inside their house during thanksgiving. Kate never dated since then and focused on her studies until she graduated, she never nor attempted to ask questions about her mother. As her father is getting old they discussed about retirement, Chief Coleman was thinking about it since he is now approaching sixties. “Katy let’s go it is almost dark.” Her father shouted at her from the driver’s seat. “Coming Dad.” She climbed on the passenger’s seat as her father ignites the engine and drive towards home. “So, any interviews lining up?” he asked her while his eyes on the road. “There’s a couple Dad, there’s this one just nearby tomorrow, the Gadducci Publishing’s and Co. His eyes narrowed and his driving slowing down, she felt the change of gear as her father pulled down at the side of the road. “Gadducci? Theodore “The Viper” Gadducci?” then there’s this look again, the kind of look she knew that he will insist that she will not go, the Gadducci interview is the biggest interview she only have right now that is close to home and she will not live into another city or state which also will save her an argument with her father. “Katy that’s Mafia.” Chief Coleman is currently on the lookout for these Mafia leaders for about sometime now and this probably his last assignment before he would retire, and he can’t let her daughter get involved into this kind of mess. “Dad, it is a publishing company it is not a meth lab, and besides we don’t know if I will get hired, that company must have thousands of applicants per day, it is unlikely that I would get hired.” This company is big and well known and had quite a reputation, many applicants with greater experience than her or more intelligent than her would probably get the job. “You will get the job, but I am not sure if you would work there, the owners are dangerous.” He always has this suspicions about those people. “Dad, it will be fine, stop with all this I will be fine and I will try my best for tomorrow’s interview, don’t worry.” That’s all he always do, worry about his daughter’s safety from day one until now and until the day he dies he will always worry about her and always in a constant lookout through any possible danger lurking around if the circumstances is in his side he would hire a 24/7 body guard for his family. “Okay, but I will take you tomorrow before I will head to work just to be sure.” He always say that, since she was still a kid. Just to be sure. “Okay Dad. It is a publishing company not something a mafia would have an interest of owning.” In her mind it is very impossible for a mobster to own publishing companies, for her the potential business would be a mall, or a manufacturing business, or a ranch but not a publishing company that would be insane.
