Chapter One
As many already know, Mitchel Junqueira is an investigative journalist who, curiously, manages to unravel the most intriguing mysteries. And for every case he solves, he gets a freebie scar. One is its famous red eye. But will he unravel a certain supernatural case that haunts Nova Andalucia, his hometown in the interior of São Paulo? This is his story now! Mitchel learned of the case from his editor-in-chief and best friend, Jonas, in the newsroom where he worked. _ What is this, Jonas? You know damn well I don't believe in ghost stories... even when I used to live there, I didn't believe it! _ Told his editor-in-chief. In many regions of the interior, it is very common and often a tradition to hear stories about haunted valleys and farms and tales of horror. And in New Andalusia it's no different... But Mitchel, who had been very skeptical since he was a child, didn't believe in those stories that were told around the campfire. However, he believed that behind every rumor, good or bad, there was always a well-disguised truth, that is, there was always someone taking advantage of country tales and urban legends to deliver the coup. He himself had lost count of how many articles he had published about d**g gangs, smugglers, serial killers, etc., who invented legends and hauntings to scare the population so that their crimes and illegal activities would not be discovered. _ Let's go Mitchel, I need you in that case! His presence was requested by the city's own delegate. And another, this story is happening in your hometown. Doesn't that bother you at all? Take the opportunity to take a vacation. How long has it been since you took a few days off to visit your family? He just looked up and down. He was torn between laughing, being outraged at her argument, or both. Jonas was an elderly man with gray hair who started journalism during the military dictatorship in Brazil. He was named a rebel, which led to his arrest and t*****e. He has seen many of his friends die and some of them are still on the politically absent list. _ Ok, let me get this straight... do you want me to go on vacation, just to investigate a supposed horror story? _ asked sarcastically the irony of his editor-in-chief, who responded in the same way. _ Come on, my friend, I know how much you love your work. If you're not after a story, it's not you. Plus, he's my best investigative journalist. There is no one else here in the newsroom with their determination, courage and astuteness to solve this case! _ Hmm... you mean your only investigative journalist who has the courage to risk his own life, right Jonas? Praise aside, the part about going out into the world and delving around was pretty much true. Although he didn't earn those things there and was aware of the risks his profession brought him, Mitchel loved playing detective. As strange as it may seem and often impossible, it can unravel mysteries, unravel tricks and solve practically impossible cases for even the most experienced detectives. Since he was a child, Mitchel has always been passionate about detective literature. He was also very fond of suspense and horror, but his favorites were detective stories, full of mysteries that make the reader feel part of the story and dream of one day publishing a book with his tales or a detective novel. But while his dream doesn't come true, he continues to work with investigative journalism. His first contact with the journalistic world was with a friend of his father, who had the idea of setting up a newsstand at the time, to bring more communication to the city. Fascinated by the novelty, he went to work with him, selling newspapers and reading the news between breaks. It was the first and only newsstand in the city and remained in this service for years, until the day the owner died and the family sold the business. Many wondered why Mitchel didn't join the police to apply for a detective job. It wasn't a bad idea, but he was scared to take a g*n. Besides, he didn't want to be stuck in that city, where, unfortunately, the only options for life were to work as a pawn on one of the farms in the region, in some local businesses or be a policeman. He wanted so much more than a simple country life. Not that she was bad, but he wanted to study, travel the world, and he thought journalism could give him that and more. In fact, it was the owner of the newsstand who encouraged him to pursue a career as a journalist. He saw that the boy had skill, because whenever there was a mystery in the region, he was the one who solved the case and made a point of telling how he discovered it. And as his father told him, the world is too big for him to limit himself to just this town. The problem is that when he goes in search of a clue for some report, sometimes he happens to be discovered and not to be captured. He had an accident while on the run. But when he was actually captured, he suffered t*****e from enemies. That's why he had scars all over his body. The red eye, which gave him the impression that he was suffering from the strangest case of heterochromia, is one of them... While investigating the smuggling of radioactive material, one of the thugs immediately got Cobalt's hands dirty and punched him in the face, contaminating his left eye. Luckily, it didn't harm his eyesight. He could still see well, but many of his eyes turned red, as if he'd had a stroke. But returning to the subject of the alleged terror case, his boss continued to argue that there was no one in that newsroom better suited for such a task, that he already knew the city, the people, etc. And seeing that there was no way to argue, he agreed to investigate the case. Even more so because it was a request from Sheriff Mathias, whom he had known since he was a child. He was a longtime friend of her family, so there was no going back. Also, because, on the one hand, it would be very interesting to unmask who is behind all this madness. His intuition, which never let him down, told him that there was someone flesh and blood and alive from Silva behind this haunted story. Also, as his dear boss and friend said, he would take the opportunity to see his family and friends again. It really had been a long time since he had seen them, so much so that the number of demands and promises to visit them increased every day. The last news from there was that the older sister, Lívia, was dating the veterinarian at the Andaluz Farm, the same where her father worked for years as a horse keeper, but it seems that they ended up... that was the story her mother told. _ Ok Jonas, since you are insisting so much and for the general good of the entire nation, I take the case. But just because I was curious about this story and I also want to prove that hauntings don't exist! I'll do what I always do, throw this s**t at the fan. _ Wow, I thought it was because of our friendship! _ Said pretending to be offended by his statement. Mitchel had just made a landscape face for his boss and added: _ If this will make you feel better... too! And they both started to laugh.
