Blurb

The burning flesh wafted through the midnight air, the smoke lingering on the tips of my nostrils. As I watched the crowd disperse into the blanket of darkness, my mind drifted to the woman who was screaming for her life. She didn’t strike me as the witch type, but in this town if you anger the wrong people, at the end of the day innocence doesn’t matter. I slowly walked out of my hiding place, the canopy of cedar pines and willow leaves no longer shielding me from the starry night. Lost in my thoughts, I slowly made my way to the stake where the woman was just burned. I was unable to place it, but it’s almost like I knew her. Her face drifting in and out of my mind's eye, and it killed me that I couldn’t recognize her. I didn’t realize that my hands were trembling until my breath hitched.

When I looked up, the body that was once on the stake...it’s gone.
