April has looked forward to meeting her mate from the time she became a teenager. Having led a sheltered life, she had never heard of anyone being rejected by their mate. Not until it happened to her. The worse part of being rejected was being replaced by another female.

Pain has a way of re-defining a person, and alpha Duncan has been through a lot of that lately. He has just survived a horrible time in his life and seeing how much damage just one traitor can do, he has come to appreciate those that are loyal to him and his pack. His mate Lily may not be his fated, but he would choose her again and again because she has proven her loyalty to him and his.

Having moved on with their lives, both April and alpha Duncan did not foresee a new turn of event when the lycan king sends her as his emissary to alpha Duncan’s pack.

What will happen when fate steps in and have the both of them thrown together under the same roof?

Will alpha Duncan break his promise to his chosen mate?

When evil comes for retribution, will they all stand together to overcome it?

(Book two of the watchers series).

Chapter 1
April I was determined to enjoy myself and was doing just that. I rolled my hips as I danced to the song that was humming through my veins. Darius rested his hands on my hips and swayed to the rhythm of the song with me. Unaware that we had every eye on us, I kept dancing till the music ended. Claps and hooting erupted from almost everyone there and I and my partner started giggling like children. Darius left to get us a drink, and I did my best to ignore alpha Duncan and his girlfriend. Even though I should be used to the pain by now, his rejection still stung. I sat down and quietly watched him flaunt his girlfriend. Hearing him introduce her as his Luna was tearing my heart into tiny pieces. Leaving the party will be best for me, as I can no longer stand the heartbreak of seeing him with another. “There you are April; I have been looking everywhere for you. I need to introduce you to someone.” Said Talia. Before I could protest, my brother’s mate practically dragged me to where the other watchers stood talking with the king and queen. She introduced me to the royals, and I was surprised at how warm they were. The discussion was centred around the affairs of the kingdom, and for some reasons, the king kept addressing his questions to me. “I still hold to the believe that brute strength characterises our kind, and that we ned to keep improving on that. Wouldn’t you agree?” The king asked me yet again. “Well, we have two sides to our existence, and we cannot succeed by relying solely on the strength that comes from one side. The beasts in us thrive on animalistic instincts, hence the need to apply brute force to everything we do. But our human side will never flourish by such.” I answered, mentally shuffling my feet in discomfort. “So you are of the opinion that we should apply diplomacy while dealing with ourselves?” The queen asked. At this point, I was sure that I have somehow landed myself in a debate between the king and queen, and I did not know whose side I was on. I looked around the group in hope that someone will bail me out. When no one did, I answered the question myself. With a bit of explanation in other not to offend either the king or queen. “I will say applying both tactics is actually needed when dealing with our kind. The beast in us will never respond to the voice of reasoning, as it only understands superiority and so will only ever respond to power. But our human side needs to be handled with diplomacy, and both are equal in their use.” Everyone was looking at me as though they have never seen me before. Especially my brother alpha Axel. The king jokingly commented that he feels like he has just finished talking with the old oracle and this made us all laugh. While we were all laughing, I heard prince Calum call out to the one couple I was trying to avoid. They walked over to our group and after introductions were made, I excused myself, and Talia did the same. She followed me outside and as soon as we were well out of earshot, she turned to face me. “It’s alpha Duncan, right?” I nodded my head, as I did not have the strength to pretend anymore. “I can’t believe he had the nerve to bring his girlfriend before his mate.” Talia fumed. “I am no longer his mate. Well, at least to him I am not.” “What do you mean by that?” Talia asked, looking perplexed. “I did not accept his rejection.” Shock registered on Talia’s face, followed by sympathy for her friend and now sister. “That means you can feel everything that goes on between him and this Lily.” Unable to hold back the pain anymore, I nodded my ‘yes’ through the lump that clogged my throat as tears ran down my cheeks. Talia led me to a seat and held my hands as she allowed me to empty my sorrow. ********* After April and Talia excused themselves and walked away, alpha Duncan became restless. He knew that feeling was coming from April, but he could not understand why her emotions were so strongly projected to him. After all, they were no longer mates. It is said that it takes time for the mate bond to wear off after rejection, but why does it look like theirs was growing stronger instead of weaker? He wondered if the mate bond was being strengthened because of his proximity to her. In fact, her thoughts were always with him since he arrived. He gave a mental sigh of relief, knowing that he will leave this pack later in the day. “I hope you can postpone your departure by another day then.” Alpha Duncan heard the king say as his mind wandered back to his present group. Before he could respond, the king and queen excused themselves to retire, and alpha Duncan looked at the other people in the group. He hoped someone will explain to him what the king meant by him postponing his journey by another day. “The king has demanded to meet with all the alphas by midday. He did not see the need to make everyone travel down to the palace for this meeting, seeing as all the alphas are present here.” Alpha Axel said to him. Just then Talia walked back to their group, and as soon as her mate saw her, he could feel how exhausted she was. He quickly made an excuse, and they, too, left. The party was finally breaking up, and people were heading to bed to catch a few hours of sleep. Lily took her lover’s hand in hers but could not even feel the storm of turmoil that was billowing in his mind. When they got to their room, she asked him to help her undo the rows of buttons on the back of her dress. Alpha Duncan did so without noticing the creamy skin that was being offered to him. Instead, his mind was clouded with the black hair, blue eyes, female that he has been fighting to forget. During this trip, he has found out who she really was. An alpha, and not just that. She is a sister to the watcher, Axel. This new information rattled him, because her identity meant she could be trusted. But will trust ever be enough. Her coming from such a lofty background could pose yet another problem for him and his little pack. She is used to the finer things of life. How much of herself would she be willing to give or take for the sake of his pack? He wanted more than trust from his mate. He wanted loyalty. Loyalty is the major reason he was sticking to Lily. She has proven herself during his darkest time, and even now, she was doing so yet again. After all that he has been through, he only wanted to surround himself with those that have proven themselves to him when it mattered the most. He sighed and looked at the naked female that has already crawled into his lap. “Not tonight Li.” With no form of response, Lily stood up and went into the bathroom to take off her makeup and went straight to bed. She felt hurt and insecure, knowing she was only his chosen mate. She always feared the day that Duncan will tire of her, or worse still, the day that he will meet his mate. A sob escaped her as she tried to control her emotions. Unable to stand the hurt in Lily’s eyes and her tears too, Duncan undressed and went to bed. He hugged her from behind and reassured her of his feelings for her. He noticed this was now a frequent occurrence since he went back to his pack. To show her how serious he was about their relationship, he has given her the freedom to act as his Luna. “What is the matter? Why are you crying again?” “I’m sorry, Duncan, but I just can’t help feeling scared and insecure right now. Seeing and interacting with the other Lunas tonight has me worried.” “why? What have they got to do with us?” He asked as he turned her around to face him. “Did you notice how confident those ladies were, plus each one of them wore their mate’s mark with pride. I had to keep pulling on the neck of my already turtleneck dress to make sure no one notices we were lying, and that I am not who we said I am.” Alpha Duncan stared at the female beside him in total confusion. He could not for the life of him remember the lies they told during the party. Lily sighed at his reaction. “We told everyone that I am your Luna.” “But you are my Luna.” Alpha Duncan said, looking even more confused. “No, I am not. Mere words cannot make me your Luna, plus you can easily withdraw those words whenever you feel like it. After all, I do not wear your scent nor your mark, neither have you bothered to perform the rituals that will seal me to you as your Luna.” After pointing out those facts that sounded more like an allegation, Lily turned her back on alpha Duncan again. He laid there staring at the ceiling as he pondered on her words. He had the mind to do those things, but he needed the pack to accept her as their Luna first. It had taken him weeks of endless talking and explanation to get his Beta, Blake and his mate Emma to accept her. In the end, they did not even accept her, but only tolerated her because of him. Even Blake’s sister Nina, who is closer to him than Blake, had told him how disappointed she was with his decision to have a chosen mate. He knew they may not understand his reasoning right away, but with time, they will get to know that loyalty was far more valuable than some fleeting feeling called love.
