Lexi
Lexi’s pov   It’s summer here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The sun warm on my face as I look out the bus window on my way to my first real interview. I feel nervous but I shake it off as the bus stops at my stop. I moved here from Detroit, Michigan, just after my only friend Lisa moved here. She had landed a job with the “ass hole” as she called him, Kaden Lance. She called me, telling me there was a job opening. Long story short, I applied online and was called for an interview. I flew in 2 days later, becoming Lisa’s new roommate. A day later I was on a bus going for my interview. I went to the receptionist’s desk, where a tall brunette woman sat. “Hi, I’m Alexis Fisher and I have an appointment with Mr. Lance.” She rolled her eyes telling me to take a seat, so I did. I picked a magazine and began reading about the major boom that was happening in the business world in Asheville. I must have waited for a while because I caught myself-reading the whole story, then two more before I heard a voice say “Miss.” I look up to see the receptionist say. “Mr. Lance will see you now.” I put the magazine down, stand, straighten my skirt and follow her to his door. She opens the door and motions for me to go in. As I do, I notice the office is rustic with a large wood desk, a bear rug on the floor in front of what looks like a wood-burning fireplace, but I’d bet it is gas. As I’m taking the scene, a voice says “Hello,” I’m startled and look up to see a tall man with beautiful brown eyes, dark hair and very tan skin looking directly at me. I almost forgot why I’m even here. I inhale to calm my stupidity and go to him, reaching my hand out to shake his. “Hello, I’m Alexis but please call me Lexi.” He nods and says “Kaden Lance, but please call me Mr Lance.” “Oh um sure, nice to meet you.” I manage nervously. He ask several questions over the next half hour and even tested me on my skills as an investigator. He pulled my school records and attendance records and quietly looked over each one. Before looking up at me. “Lisa has told me you 're an excellent investigator. I know you want to jump right in but that’s not how we run things around here, you will start at the bottom just as everyone else in the firm has.” ”So, I got the job?” “Yes, you can start Monday morning.” “Thank you so much for this opportunity.” I smile, happy that I got the job, but disappointed that I won’t be working from my own office just yet. But hey, gotta start somewhere.   That was a year ago, and I am still in the mailroom. I sigh and look at the clock. I sort mail for a few hours more and deliver it all to its intended place. The day ends, and I am finally getting ready to head home for the day. The bus comes to a stop near our building, and I realize I forgot my keys. I quickly call Lisa, “Hey she says on the other side of the line.” Hey, I forgot my key. Are you close?" “Yeah, hey I have great news.” “Hang tight, be there in 10.” She hangs up, and I wait. It’s not the best neighborhood we live in, so I pay close attention to my surroundings as sit on the steps our building. I watch as a very handsome man dressed in a black suit walks out of our building down the steps, not even looking at me as he walks right by where I am sitting and casually gets in what looks like a black Mercedes SUV. Then it hit me: OH MY GOD! That was my boss, Kaden Lance. I hadn’t seen him but a handful of times after he hired me. Even though it’s a small firm, he was extremely busy. Lisa waves as she turns the corner and walks up to me. “Uh, you’re never going to believe what just happened.” I say. “No, me first she begs, then she blurts out, you got a promotion!” My eyes went wide in shock. “What? I scream.” Hugging Lisa, both of us jumping around like two teenagers who just got their first kiss. Then reality hit and I hear the door open. My attention automatically on a woman she was probably in her mid-40s. She is Blond, dressed in a tight black dress with 6 inch red heels. She was beautiful. I feel my heart thud as I assume that’s who he had been to visit. “Lisa,” I say as we enter our apartment building. “I just saw Mr Lance leave our building?” “What.” Lisa said. “Kaden was here?” “He may have been coming over to tell you in person.” “Yeah, I don’t think he was here to see me or you.” I nodded in the lady's direction. Lisa laughs, knowing how my mind works. “Forget Kaden, Let’s go out.” Lisa says I start to say no when she says, “come on, we have to celebrate your promotion. We will go to Snyder’s.” Snyder’s is the local bar. It’s a mixture of young and old. Kind of laid back unless they have a band then it gets a little wild. “Come on.” she begs and I finally say “ok but were ordering wings I’m starving! And you’re paying.” I playfully say to her. “Don’t push it, Lexi I never pay for my drinks she says, winking at me.” I roll my eyes; I wish you would let all those men buy your drinks. They expect something in return, Lisa. “Oh, come on. Get a grip. Nothing bad is going to happen, Lexi. Let lose for one night and have some fun, ok?” “Fine.” I hold my hand in the air. “Good, go change. We are leaving in twenty minutes. I texted an Uber.” I hurry to go get dressed. I choose jeans and a tight fitting shirt; I choose a sport jacket to match the heels I slipped on as well. I look in the mirror and roll my eyes at the sight. My dark blond hair is a mess. It hangs down my back halfway and had natural curls so it is always a mess. I wrap it up in a lose bun and head out, putting on my mascara in the living room where Lisa is already waiting, as if she has a magic wand that makes her beautiful when she waves it. I shake my head and say. “How do you do that so fast?” “Do what so fast she says?” “Look like you just stepped out of a magazine in five minutes.” “My grandma taught me well.” “Well, you need to teach me few tricks of the trade because I could take a full hour and have this same result I have now.” I say, laughing as we leave. We make it to Snyder’s and there is a full house as usual, most of the crowd is business folks just getting off work stopping in for a quick beer and burger before heading home. There are fresh faces tonight though. I notice they are tall and very muscular. Like monstrous size men. They all remind me of Kaden. He is bug like that. My mind drifts back to the woman I saw leaving our building. I wonder if she has moved into the building. Will. It’s not the best neighborhood so people with their money wouldn’t stoop that low for living space. There would be no need to live that way; “Lexi.” I hear Lisa saying my name. “Come on let sit at the bar.” We make our way over to the bar, and I take a seat next to one of the enormous men. He ignores me, of course, as most men do, and I turn my body away from him to talk with Lisa. “So I got the job, huh?” “Yes!” She smiles. “And how much begging did you have to do to make sure I got it?” She shakes her head. “I didn’t Kaden came in my office this morning and told me you got the promotion. I prepared your office all day she said with a smile.” I made a sad face and said, “Awe Thanks”. She waved me off as if it was no big deal, but not many people have helped me in my life. Especially since I turned 18. My parents thought I should be able to survive on my own without any help and well I guess, I have done pretty well but it is still nice to have someone care for you. We ordered wings and beer and talked about what my promotion would entail. She explained that I would be working with Kaden for the first two months on this big new case he took. I am immediately nervous, still not sure what I saw today and now I have to work with the man. Great, I thought to myself. I will probably be fired on the first day. We had a few more beers and one of the men came up to us and offered to buy us both another round I shook my head no but Lisa the magnet she is, excepted with her breath-taking smile, winking at him. He smiled and told the bartender to bring us three beers. He takes the seat beside Lisa and they begin to talk. I reach out to touch Lisa’s arm as I feel a man sit down beside me, where I thought there was someone sitting already. I turn to see Kaden staring at me. “OH Um Hi. Mr. Lance.” He laughs and says. “please call me Kaden.” “Ok,” I smile nervously. Lisa then sees him and says “hey, boss what are you doing slumming with the help.” He shakes his head and says, “I don’t know how you put up with living with her.” I laugh a little, still unsure of the beast of a man sitting next to me. But relax when he started talking to Lisa about work. I start to stand, saying to Lisa that I am going to head on home but Kaden grabs my arm to stop me. I feel electricity shoot through me as if I had been shocked but in a good way, “Have a drink, I would like to get to know you better.” I go to open my mouth to protest, but nothing comes out. I am speechless for the first time in my whole life. I just sit back down and look at him. He laughs. “I am not going to bite you, Lexi. Yet, anyway.” I see something in his eyes change just a hint of something sparkly. Then just as fast as it was there, it was gone. And he is staring at me like he could actually eat me. I open my mouth looking for something to say when I hear myself say “Um so Lisa tells me I am to be working with you over the next few months.” He nods and says, “Yes. It is a special case and fresh eyes will help especially eyes as new as yours.” “I am confused as to why you would think that. I am very new to this. What if I mess up?” “That’s why you will be working with me, so I can keep an eye on you.” “Oh, okay.” I say. “Don’t look so alarmed, I wouldn’t have hired you if you weren’t qualified and I thought I had put you through enough of the mail room.” He laughed a full on laugh then, “really?” I said. “You planned this all along.” “I will see you Monday morning at 7 am sharp. Do not be late.” “I won’t.” “See you then.” He smiles and leaves. Not even saying goodbye to Lisa, I thought, as I couldn’t help but watch him leave, now more confused than ever about this man.
