“It's not my fault I'm a ghost.”

“Ghost, as in figuratively?”

I imagined her rolling her sparkly brown eyes at me even as her stares were piercing like a sword's. Kayla sighed frustratedly and shook her head.

“A real ghost. I'm dead.”

To save her family from the facing the same nightmare as her, a teenage ghost joins forces with a young heir who left home due to suffocation with his father, stepmother and stepbrother. Internal and external conflicts surface, and there's a fight for life, love and rights, but some things are just not meant to be.

Humans should live; Ghost should return.

But Kayla will cast her protecting shadows either way.

PROLOGUE
Kayla. 'Wait! Over here! Karen! Vivian! Wait for me!' I yelled, running yards behind the two who trekked along the streets, talking. Though they trudged, I didn't seem to keep up with them. I have been running behind them, calling so loud and they didn't seem to hear me. It's pretty boring trekking to school without company. I clutched the hands of my backpack and just walked to school alone, watching the duo melt into the crowd of busy passers-by. I arrived at the school premises and surprisingly didn't feel tired as usual. I was usually a cynosure in school and today, no one looked in my direction. They all seemed busy with one thing or another. None of my troop members. I had never been alone in school too. My girl g**g and I always walked together. 'Where on earth are the girls?' I asked myself, looking around. Even the boys didn't coo around me. Strange. Things started to get more awkward. Mr. Gilbert. Gilbert the Grumpy, we usually called him. He was the strictest and grumpiest of all teachers in school. I passed by him and he didn't have any complaints today. Moreso, I was late for assembly and he said nothing. This was when I smelt something not right in school. I continued to plod to Algebra class. A few of my classmates walked behind me. Some by my side and some in front of me. None even said hi. I became upset, but not that angry because I knew they were definitely pranking me, and Mr. Gilbert's indifference was a mere coincidence. After all, he had mood swings now and then. Just a few steps into the classroom and the speakers around blared the principal's croaky voice. 'All students and staff, kindly assemble in the school auditorium immediately. An important message is to be passed across. Thanks.' I couldn't help but notice how sad her voice was. Totally wrong day to come to school. All the students hurried to the hall, while I backed away so as not to get hurt in the mini-stampede. I didn't feel like going for the impromptu assembly, but I didn't mind going to the Principal's office to get a clue of what the important message was all about. I quickly hid behind the doors and watched Principal Maria march alongside two other teachers, out of her office. Sure that no one was around, I crept into the big office. I looked around her table and only saw books and papers and other normal stuff you see in a Principal's office. The personal computer that sat on her glossy desk caught my attention. I moved closer to see what was on the screen. THE NEWS AT TIMELY 8:32 AM A NEW DEATH REPORT A teenage girl was reported dead early this morning in the KIM AND JONES street. Time is not specific. 12th June, 2019. The young girl, who by information from reliable sources and verified pictorial evidence, was on her way to school, when she was knocked down by a car, making a hit and run case, as the driver absconded before people around could take action. She died on the spot and her body was taken away immediately from the scene of the accident. Other information about the deceased is to be kept confidential till further notice. The Mayor and a lot of citizens have reached out their condolences..... I stopped reading. That was obviously the important message. I felt bad and hoped the dead girl was not from our school. I wished it was nobody I knew, but I didn't realize what was in store for me. The girl in the news was me.
