Chapter 1
I was 24 years old when I saw my first dead body. Living in a small logging town like Shelton, you tend to be somewhat sheltered. Front page news included the upcoming Christmas parade, or a string of beer runs at the local market. I have never even been to a funeral or a viewing, but here in front of me lays a man who died by my hand. I believe I am in shock. I am standing over a lifeless body and I am completely covered in blood. Instantly, I was pulled into a memory of the night before, when my friend Analetta and I went to the ocean for the weekend. We always go there for her birthday because hotels are super cheap in off season. It is the only time we can afford a fancy hotel on our waitress salaries. The plan was to just stay in a nice hotel, swim, rent some movies, and lounge around. We usually get a ground level room, so we are close to the twenty-four-hour indoor pool and Jacuzzi and because it is the cheapest. Our room was huge and luxurious compared to our small one-bedroom apartment. The room included a large closet, a small kitchen area, a fireplace, bathroom, and glass French doors leading to the beach. The site of two queen size beds excited me. I usually sleep on a small lumpy twin size bed, so I was really looking forward to curling up to a movie later. After a few minutes of checking out the room we threw our bags on our beds, changed into our bikinis, and headed for the pool. We approached the pool area, and I swiped the door with my key card. I pulled the door open and was instantly hit with the smell of chlorine. The room is huge with vaulted ceilings and large skylights. To my right is a Jacuzzi that looked very inviting. To my left, a door that led to a sauna. In the center, a long rectangular shallow pool, and a smaller 12-foot pool with a diving board. On the far wall, a door with a sign that read Weight Room. Our first stop is the hot tub. We both stepped in and slid down in total relaxation. "Do you want to jump off the diving board with me?" She opened her eyes long enough to shake her head. I climbed out by myself and headed for the diving board. I rose to the top and stood on the end of the blue board, but before I could launch myself into the water two men emerged from the weight room. Two extremely handsome and very muscular men. Neither of them seemed to notice us. The two men were the tall, dark, and handsome type. Both had brown hair and olive skin. The first man instantly caught my attention. He had messy hair, but it was sexy messy like it was styled that way intentionally. The other man was quite a bit taller than the first. His hair was shorter, not a strand out of place. He had a wealthy businessman look about him, although it’s hard to tell because both of them were wearing nothing but shorts and a white towel hung around their necks. When the taller of the two locked eyes with me I realized I had been standing here and staring at these men for god only knows how long. I felt my face get hot with embarrassment, so I quickly dove in. When evening came around, we decided to change out of our bathing suits and get ready to go for dinner. On our way here we spotted a cute seafood restaurant. It was located on the pier within walking distance of our hotel and I am a sucker for fish and chips. The restaurant was small and comfortable. The outside was decorated with seashell wind chimes, buoys, and anchors. When we walked inside, I was instantly taken over with the smell of fried fish. There was a long wall completely covered with a large tropical fish tank. We took our seats and waited for the waitress, which did not take long considering we were pretty much the only people in the entire place besides the employees. After eating, we decided to rent some movies, head back to the hotel, and enjoy our comfy beds and the fireplace. Ana and I did our nightly routine, we washed our faces, brushed our teeth, and changed into our jammies. As soon as we settled in our beds and started watching the previews there was a knock at the door. Outside stood one of the men from the pool area. The one who reminded me of a suit and tie type of guy only he was dressed in jeans and a black button up shirt. He was extremely good looking, much taller than me, and had dark brown eyes that seemed to look right through me. "Hello, my name is Isaiah. I am staying on the top floor with my brother. We are having a few people over this evening for cocktails and we are wondering if you ladies want to join us". “I don't think so" I replied. "We are actually about to press play on a movie and turn in early." I smiled politely and quickly closed the door. Something about Isaiah gave me goose bumps. I turned away from the door and headed back to my bed. I giggled “can you believe I just said, turn in”? I swear I just felt myself age a little.” As soon as I seen Ana’s face, I could tell she was eager to go. "What? You want to go, don't you?" She stared at me for a moment before she began rambling like she always does when she feels the need to convince me. "Well it is my birthday and I know we planned a night in, but we do the same thing every year. I feel like we should switch it up for once. Plus, that guy was super-hot!" Again, she just stared at me with wide eyes. "Fine" I sighed. We began digging through our bags. Tossing clothes all over the room. Pulling clothes on and back off until we found the right outfits. I settled on my faded skinny jeans and a light pink hoodie. Comfy cute clothes were pretty much all I brought besides my swimsuit. Packing I was under the assumption we were staying in all weekend. Ana looked beautiful. She wore her black leggings, cobalt blue open toed pumps, and her silk black blouse. She wore that same blouse often, but I can see why. It shows off her very thin frame and abnormally huge chest. I didn’t question why she packed pumps and a silk blouse because she is almost always prepared for any occasion. Then we hit the bathroom like tornados. Our makeup, my curling iron and Ana’s straightener crowded the countertop. Ana has short blond hair and a porcelain complexion. Her hair is naturally straight, but she takes a straightener to it every day without fail. She has light blue eye that where easy to get lost in. My hair is black and has a wavy texture. It falls just above my lower back. I almost always curl it or throw it up in my signature messy bun. Tonight, I figured I would go the extra mile and curl it since I am pretty sure I am under dressed for cocktails. About an hour had passed when we both felt pleased with our reflection and headed out the door. Ana and I are as different as day and night in every way possible. She has a model figure. Tall, thin, perfect skin, blue eyes, and blond hair. I, on the other hand, am short, curvey, with dark hair, tan complexion, and hazel eyes. Our personalities are also extremely different, which is why I am a firm believer in the old saying – opposites attract. We stopped at the front desk remembering that Isaiah told us he was on the top floor, but never gave us the room number. "Hi, my name is Zara Blaine from room 4. A man named Isaiah came to our door earlier this evening. I am wondering if you could tell me what room he is in?" He began clicking around on his computer for a moment. "He said they stayed on the top floor" I added while he was still browsing around on the computer. Instantly he looked up and told me there is no one staying on the fifth floor and no one here by the name of Isaiah. Confused we started back to our room. When we reached the door, Ana stopped me and began her usual persuasion tactics. "Let’s just go upstairs. Maybe the guy at the front desk wasn't here when they checked in and maybe the room is in his brother’s name. If all of the other rooms up there are vacant then it will be the only room with noise coming from it." I rolled my eyes and we headed for the stairs. After climbing the five flights of stairs to the top floor I instantly felt nervous, but I decided I would wander the halls with Ana anyways. She seemed determined to have a good time on her birthday. I didn't want to stand in her way. “Right or left?” she asked. I pointed to the right, so she grabbed me by my arm and dragged me to the left. Typical of Ana to go the opposite direction. When we made it to the end of the first hallway, I started to wonder if the guy at the front desk was right. There are no sounds coming from any room. We turned around and headed toward the other hall. “Maybe Isaiah was mistaken about which floor they were staying on” I said. “Maybe, but I am already in my fun clothes, so let’s keep looking for a little longer and if we don’t find them, we can find a bar.” I let out a big sigh before replying “Fine!” I hate the bar scene with a passion, so now I am on board with the search. I turned to start walking again and ran right into the other man from the weight room. Shirtless and dripping in sweat he looked ridiculously sexy and he looked just as good in light blue jeans and a white tee that showed every curve and crease of his well-toned body. I was completely entranced by his olive skin and soft green eyes. I am not as boy crazy as Ana, but something about this man felt dangerously beautiful. When he spoke, I snapped back to reality. Realizing that I was standing very close to him, taking in his phenomenal body, I blushed and took a step back. “Have you guys decided to join us?” he asked with a smile on his face revealing a perfect set of teeth. I was still mesmerized by his handsomeness and couldn’t get myself to reply. “Sorry about my friend” Ana replied while snapping her fingers in front of my face till I tore my eyes off him. “Yeah, after Isaiah left, I convinced my friend here that we need a social life” she told him. I stayed silent still, trying not to make eye contact and embarrass myself again. The man reached out and grabbed my hand “My name is Logan Lesko.” I looked up at his face just long enough to reply. “Zara Blaine” I replied and slid my hand free of his. “And this is my friend Analetta Justus.” “Just call me Ana” she added while shaking his hand. After our introductions he led us to their room at the end of the right hallway. We stepped inside and Logan introduced us to his brother, who had earlier given us his first name, but we hadn’t given him ours. I took a seat on an overstuffed chair near the fireplace and Ana followed Isaiah over to the bar. This room is very upscale compared to ours on the first floor. It is like being in a completely different hotel. The wall across from the door is window from ceiling to floor with an amazing view of the ocean. The French doors resembled the ones in our room only these led to a huge balcony. The walls are off-white with beautiful paintings. The furniture looked like it came from a castle straight out of an old movie. Beautiful gold chandeliers hung from the very high ceilings. After being blindsided by the beauty of the room, I realized it is only the four of us here. I looked at Logan “how come we are the only ones here? Isaiah said you are having a few people over for cocktails.” He walked over to the chair that mirrored mine on the other side of the fireplace. “They cancelled at the last minute.” Suddenly, I became nervous again. We are alone in a room that apparently the guy at the front desk thinks is vacant and with two very muscular men that we just met. I looked over at Ana, she had a drink in her hand and is deep in conversation with Isaiah. I didn’t really know what to do. I feel like we should leave, but how would I go about getting Ana to leave when we just got here? Just as the thought entered my mind Logan asked if he could get me a drink. I don’t want to be rude, yet I feel like I am in a situation that requires me to have a clear head. “Yes, thank you” I said. I figured I would just baby my drink, so I can stay sober. Logan returned with a pink tinted drink. When he handed it to me, I took a small sip just to show my appreciation. “Thank you.” For a few minutes Logan and I both sat there quiet, while Ana and Isaiah talked and laughed like they were old friends. “Would you like to see the view” Isaiah asked Ana while taking her hand and leading her to the door before she even answered. As the door shut behind them the silence in the room seemed to grow. “So, what brought you guys to Ocean Shores?” he asked breaking the unwieldy silence. “We come here every year for Ana’s birthday. It has been our tradition since she was eighteen. What brings you and your brother here?” I asked trying to keep the conversation going. “Vacation” he replied. “Weird place to take a vacation this time of year. It’s cold, windy, and wet. Where are you guys from?” He hesitated for a moment and glanced at the door before answering “We live in Shikaar.” “Where is -” My question was cut off when Ana stumbled in laughing and Isaiah entered the room behind her. Logan placed a hand on my knee and all the sudden my nerves calmed, and I was lost in his exquisiteness again. “Let’s go join our boisterous other halves for a drink.” For some reason I felt like trusting him. He made me want to forget my fears and enjoy myself. I nodded and he grabbed my hand and led me to the bar. “I hear it is your birthday Ana” Logan said as he approached the bar still holding my hand. Before answering, she gave me a playful glare and then turned to look at Logan “it is”. He grabbed a bottle of tequila and a handful of shot glasses. “Well let’s celebrate!” We all followed him to the sitting area that had a Victorian style coffee table in the center and a small couch on each side to match. Logan set the bottle and glasses down on the table and began to pour tequila in each of them. “I forgot something” he said, “I will be right back.” Ana sat down on one of the couches and Isaiah quickly sat beside her. I sat on the couch opposite of them. He was getting close to her talking at a volume only meant for her to hear. She giggled flirtatiously in response. Logan returned with a plate of lime wedges and a salt shaker. Just in time because I was beginning to feel like the third wheel. He sat down next to me and took my hand. He brought it close to his face. I could feel his warm breath caress my skin. To my surprise he licked the skin between my thumb and index finger. I felt my face get hot and hoped my liquid foundation was doing a good job at hiding my now rosy cheeks. After adding salt, he did the same to his hand and then passed the salt around the table. We all grabbed a shot glass and a slice of lime off the table. “This one is for the birthday girl” Isaiah said keeping eye contact with her. We all lifted our glasses. As I licked the salt off my hand, I felt myself blush again. So much for sober and clear minded. In unison, we put the glass to our lips and tilted our heads back. The liquid was cold but felt warm all the way down. I put the lime to my mouth, bit down, and sucked the citrus juice in, calming the burning sensation of the tequila. Ana and Isaiah went back to acting like they were alone in the room except for when we made another toast to the birthday girl. Once we were all a few shots in, I began to loosen up some and started enjoying myself. Although I began to relax, I still could not keep my eyes off Logan. He is, by far, the most attractive man I have ever seen. I watched him as he made his way across the room to a small radio. I didn’t recognize the song, but it made me want to get up and dance. Apparently, it made Ana feel the same way. I knew I couldn’t possibly look as amazing as she does, but I decided to get up and join her. I closed my eyes and let my body do all the work. All the sudden I began to feel beautiful, happy, and completely relaxed. When I opened my eyes and returned to the room, I once again felt the temperature rise in my cheeks. Everyone in the room, including Ana, was watching me. It was a very awkward moment, but I didn’t care. I walked over to Logan, grabbed his hand, and pulled him to his feet. “Dance with me” I told him. This behavior wasn’t like me at all, but I felt so alive and adventurous. He smiled, placed his hand on the arch of my back, and pulled me in to him. His touch took my breath away. I hoped my body was dancing because all I could think about was his closeness. Every ounce of me wanted to feel his lips against mine and to remove the clothes that came between us.
