"Let go of me!"

"No. Listen to me. You have to tell him you don't like him. Everything you had was a mistake. Do you understand me?"

I nodded. There was no way I was getting away from him. His grip was too tight.

"Good." He let go of my wrist and walked away. A tear fell from my eye as I looked at my wrist. It was red. There's definitely going to be a bruise...

After losing her Grandpa, Katie has distracted herself from the pain. She became the most popular girl in school! Hanging out with Owen Deen's group has added to her popularity. But when a new mystery guy comes along, her life changes in even more!

Parties & Church
Summertime!! The best time of the year! Everyone always looks forward to it. Longer days, later nights, and best of all, better life! That is, if you haven't lost someone. Just two weeks into summer break Katie Holt's papaw was rushed to the hospital. Her parents left her and her brother to go be with him. They worked together to keep the house clean. Her brother, Eli, was only a year younger than her. It was easy for them to keep the house in order. Weeks went by and her Papaw hadn't gotten any better. Katie tried to stay strong for her brother. She knew worrying wasn't going to help anything. Finally, Katie decided to have some fun. Her friends had been begging her for weeks to go to a party with them. Never being the party type Katie normally declined their invite. This time though, she had agreed. She knew she deserved to go out and have fun. ------ "Katie! Get out here now!" My friend Hazel yells. "No way! Not in this outfit." I walk towards my bathroom mirror and look at myself. My friends have been too a lot parties. It seemed like a good idea to let them choose my outfit. Now though, I am regretting my decision to let them help me. What they picked isn’t too bad. I just usually wouldn’t wear something like this. They picked short black shorts, a red tank top, and a leather jacket. I was able to choose my own shoes. I decided on red vans. With one last look at myself I walk towards the door. "Are you sure about this outfit?" I ask through the door. "Of course!" Emma yells. "We wouldn't have picked it if we weren’t," Emma's twin Fiona yells. Sighing I open the door and walk out of the bathroom and into my room. The girls smile at me as I walk out. I sit down in my chair and let Hazel do my hair. She straightens it and pulls the bangs up, into a bump. When she is done I do my makeup. Nothing too drastic. Just tight lined eyeliner and black smokey eye. After I put mascara on I get up. "Aw! Katie you look so pretty," Hazel says. "AA!" The twins squeal with excitement. I just giggle and grab my phone, putting it in my jacket pocket as I walk out of my room. My friends follow behind me. We head towards the kitchen where my brother is there eating. "Eli, we are going to head out now,” I say. "Okay. Have f--" He stops as he looks up at me. "Katie?" "Yeah?" I say confused. "You let them pick your outfit. Huh?" Eli says motioning towards the girls. "Of course we picked it out!" Emma says smiling. Eli chuckles and goes back to eating. With one last wave we all head out to Hazel's car. We decided there was no reason to take any other cars. Once inside I quickly become nervous. I have only been to one other party in my life. It was boring and weird so I had left early. Before I know it we are driving up to a crowded house. The music is spilling out of the house. I can feel the bass pounding as soon as I open the car door. So many people are here. They are everywhere! I am frozen in my spot. It is absolutely insane! My thoughts are suddenly broken as Fiona links our arms together. She pulls me with her towards the house. "Whose party is this?" I yell to Emma. "Owen Deen's!" My jaw drops. Owen Deen's party? Wow! He is the most popular guy in school. Captain of the wrestling team, and Eli's best friend. I hope he won’t see me. I have always had a crush on him. Being the shy girl I am, I'm sure he won't even bother talking to me. Finally we reach the door. I feel a renewed wave of fear spread over me. I enter slowly with my friends. Everywhere I look there is someone there. This has to be the most crowded place I'd ever been too. Music is loud, and the bass is vibrating my insides. I keep hold of Fiona as we maneuver our way through the crowds of dancing bodies. I see Owen walking towards us. He has a few drinks with him. Wait, is he really coming towards us? No way, he has to be going to someone else. "Hey ladies," Owen says handing Fi and I a drink. I hadn't realized until now that we had lost Hazel and Emma. "H-Hi," I stutter. Really! Stuttering. This is embarrassing. Come on Katie! Be cool. "Fi, who's your friend?" Owen asks. "Owen, this is Katie. Katie Holt," she says unlinking our arms and walking away. Thanks a lot Fi, I think to myself. "Holt? Oh Eli's sister?" He asks. "Yeah, that's me." "Wow. You look... so different." "Is that a good or bad thing?" I ask unsure. "Good. Most definitely good," He grins. I feel myself blush. I cannot believe I am here. At Owen Deen's party. Actually having a conversation with him! And he complimented me. "So," Owen says putting his arm around my shoulder. "First party?" Woah! Is this really happening? Owens arm is around my shoulder. He moves me a different way, through the crowd of people. "Um no. I went to one before but it was boring," I say. "I see." We walk up to a table. There is a bowl with some type of drink in it. Most likely a type of alcohol. Owen grabs a cup and pours himself a drink. Looking at my still full cup he laughs. "What?" I ask looking down. He puts a finger under my chin, lifting my head up. I look him in the eyes and he smiles at me. "You should at least try to have fun," He says. Then he leans closer and whispers "At least while your friends are watching." I shudder a bit when his breath hits my ear. As I look up, I see my friends dancing with some guys. Every so often they would sneak glances my way. Shaking my head I turn to Owen. I knew my friends would spy on me. They don’t think I know how to have fun. I'll admit I haven't had a lot of fun since my Papaw got sick, but I do know how! And tonight I'll prove it! Owen starts to lift his drink. I stop him and lightly tap his cup with mine. He chuckles and we both take a drink. I am not too fond of the taste but I finish it up anyway. I set my cup down and Owen laughs. He sets his cup down also and grabs my hand. He pulls me towards the dancing area. I reluctantly go with him. By the time we join the other dancers I am feeling more comfortable being with him. The song changes when we get there. Dance The Night Away by David Banner comes on next. I know this song well. Owen and I start dancing together. We are at a good distance just freely dancing. It shocks me when he put his hands on my hips and pulls me close to him. Our bodies move perfectly together to the beat of the music. I lean my back against his chest and move my hips slightly. He spins me around and pulls me up to him. I see him bite lip as his hand brushes down my back. He starts to lean closer to me. Something clicks in my brain and I jump back a bit. Owen looks confused. I know my cheeks are turning red with embarrassment. I walk away quickly to the table. I pick up an empty, unused cup and get another drink. Hazel walks over towards me. "Well, well. Looks like our little Katie is finally growing up," She teases. "And having fun," Emma adds as she comes towards us. "I am actually. Thank you for making me come," I say. I finish my drink and look around. Owen is nowhere in sight. Hopefully I’ll find him again later. Speaking of finding someone, I don’t see Fiona anywhere. "Hey Em, where's Fi?" I ask. She glances around the room quickly. Her eyes stop suddenly. Giggling, she points. Hazel and I follow her finger. My jaw drops a bit as I watch Riley Stevens pin Fiona to the wall with a kiss. We all laugh and fill our cups. Suddenly the lights shut off. Different colored laser lights fill the room. It is so awesome. I drink my drink and just as I set it down someone grabs my arm. I jump, turning around to see who it is. The lighting is too dark to make out who it is. He pulls me with him towards a crowd of dancing people. Finally I realize it is Owen holding my arm. Relieved I start to dance with him. He had picked up two drinks on our way and hands one to me. I know I shouldn't drink it but I do anyway. We both toss our drinks aside and continue to dance. Once again I turn around and my back rubs up against his chest. He puts his hands on my hips and we move together with the beat of the music. Everything suddenly starts to get hazy. It feel as if the room has started spinning. I push that aside and dance. The bass vibrating loudly in my ears. ----- Beep! Beep! Slowly I lift my head up from my pillow. Light hits my eyes causing me to groan. My head is pounding. With my eyes still closed I reach for my phone. When I find it I open my eyes just a little. There is a text from Eli. Eli - Hey, I went to church without you. You and your friends looked exhausted. Love you. Sighing, I force my eyes open. The light strikes my eyes again but this time I ignore it. With my eyes almost back to normal I stand up. My head spins a bit and it feels like a hammer is pounding my head. Looking down I see my three friends scattered on the floor. Not wanting to wake them, I step slowly and quietly around them. I reach my bathroom and enter quietly. I pick up a towel and sit it by my sink. After I get out of my party clothes, which I guess I didn't take off for bed, I get in the shower. I turn on the shower letting the warm water hit my body. After I don't know how long I get out of the shower. I wrap my towel around me and look in the mirror. There is smudged makeup on my face. I think I resemble a raccoon. I get some makeup remover to wipe the rest of it off. "Are we going to church?" Emma asks as she sits up. I look at her and point to the clock. It is almost too late to go. I guess if we hurry though, we can make it. I at least have to go. "If you want to go to church with me, get up!" I yell to my friends. Slowly they all get up. I change into a white dress because I don’t want to look like a slob at church. "Can we borrow a dress?" The twins ask in unison. I nod and head down stairs. I rush around the kitchen to think of something to make for breakfast. Finally I decide to just pick up coffees and doughnuts on the way. I hear the girls slowly descend the stairs. Once they are down I grab my keys and we all head out the door. Leo's Doughnuts is close so I hurry there and get coffees and the doughnuts. "Why do you have to be so early to church?" Hazel whines. "You know why!" I say rolling my eyes. When my mom left I took over the child care for her. Not that I didn't like church, I did, but now I barely get to hear the sermons. Even though there is a TV broadcasting the sermon, the kids are just too loud. I pull up into a parking spot and rest my head on the steering wheel. "Katie," Emma says. "What?" I groan. I hear her dig through her purse. She pulls something out that rattles. I am guessing it is some type of medicine. There is a light tap on my shoulder. I slowly lift my head and look at Emma. "Here," She says handing me two bright blue pills. "For your head." Quickly I snatch them out of her hand. I wasn't mad at her or the others. I mean yeah, they took me to the party, but it was my fault I drank. Wait. I don't remember going home. Who drove? Obviously I didn't. If I would've I'm sure we'd crash. Or get pulled over. Yeah, my parents would love that. The police calling to tell them I was pulled over for a DUI. Or worse that I had died in a crash. Okay Katie. Calm down. You're safe. "Katie, time to go in," Fi says pulling me out of my minor freak out. "Yeah, let me take these real quick," I say looking down at the pills. I pop them in my mouth with a drink of coffee to wash them down. It tasted kind of gross but I hope it'll help. I am sure Emma wouldn't give me something for nothing. Emma seems wide awake. Maybe she was the one who drove home. I guess I'll ask her later. We head up to the church together quickly. There is a flash in my eyes. Looking to my right I see a black motorcycle. No one in my church has a motorcycle. Maybe we have guests. That would be great! I love meeting new people. Oh, maybe they will be around my age. That would be even cooler. We haven't had a whole lot of new people lately. I wonder why that is. My friends and I are the only high school students. Well, obviously my brother also. And Maya. My brother’s girlfriend. "Katie! I'm so glad you're here!" A voice calls. I look through the crowd and instantly spot a blonde girl running towards me. It has to be Maya. Quickly she takes my arm and pulls me to the child care. I look up as we go and see a guy in the back corner of the hall. He is leaned up against the wall with his arms crossed. He looks up at me as I am pulled by. I smile at him and next thing I know I was in the room. "Okay, we have three extra kids today. Over there," Maya points. "Aaron, Kenzie, and Laci. They are just visiting for today." I smile at the three kids, and then look at Maya. "Did you see that guy?" "What guy?" Maya asks. "The one in black? He was in the hall. Remember, when you were crazily pulling me in here," I say. She looks confused for a moment. "No," she says shaking her head. "I didn't see anyone." "Oh." I wonder if I really even saw him. I'm not sure how much sleep I got last night but I'm sure it wasn't a lot. He probably wasn't even there. Yeah, just my imagination. Oh well. I need to focus on what I'm doing. Walking to a table I set out some crayons. Now I just need some paper. Usually Maya sets it out. She seems kind of stressed out right now. Maybe I'll go get some myself. Usually there's some next door in the supply closet. I reach for the door handle but I am stopped. There is a light tap on the back of my leg. I turn around to see a small blonde headed girl behind me. "Where you going?" The girl asks me. I couldn't help but smile. She is absolutely adorable. Her soft brown eyes looking widely up at me. "You're Laci? Aren't you?" I ask the little girl. She nods still watching me. "Okay, well I'm going to get paper," I start. "Would you like to come with me?" Slowly she reaches for my hand. I take it and we exit the room. The little girls grip tightens when we see shadows down the hall. Church hasn't officially started. So there's no reason to worry. Probably just a new person looking around. Well actually church is about to start, so whoever it is really should be getting back to the rest of the congregation. I stop in front of the door to the supply room. "Papers in here," I say to Laci. She looks up but then back to the shadows. The shadows haven’t moved. Right as I am about to say something I am cut off by shouting. "What are you doing here?!" A girl shouts. I take the short silence as an opportunity to go in the supply closet. Laci crouches down, pulling me with her. The voices are still very clear. Why are they fighting? I want to know but I am not leaving Laci behind. I guess I'll just listen through the door. "I came to see her!" A male voice yells. "You don't get to see her! You lost that right 4 years ago!" The girl yells. Her voice is so familiar. Where have I heard it before? I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe she goes here. That has to be it. Or maybe from the local diner. I'm not sure but I'll figure it out some other time. "Just get away from me!" The girl yells. "Not until I see her!" The guy yells. "No way!" The girl fake laughs. "And I saw you watching Katie!" My eyes widen. I'm Katie. Who are these people! I'm getting nervous. The girl obviously knows me. But who's the guy? I must have not seen him, because I'm pretty sure no one was watching me. Unless I didn't notice. I was being pulled quickly by Maya. Yeah, I must've missed whoever it is. "So what," The guy says breaking my thoughts. The voices have gotten quieter now. It seems that they have moved closer this way. "What do you mean, so what?" The girl says. "Exactly how it sounds!" "Wow! Get the hell out of here! Stay away from me! And my daughter!" The girl now yells. "You mean our daughter." Whack! You could hear that slap. It was loud. I only hope the girl hit him. Not the other way around. "She's not yours! Now leave! And stay away. From Katie too," She yells. The guy chuckles. "We'll see sweetheart.' The footsteps walk away. I grab the paper and hurry down the hall. Pulling little Laci along with me, I go in the daycare room. Who were they? Neither sounded scared of the other. Why my name? I'm thankful the girl said to stay away. He sounded mean. I look down at Laci who is looking up at me. Kneeling down I set the paper on the table. She looks at me, not saying a word. Hopefully she isn't too scared right now. It'd be my fault if she is. Maya walks towards us and tells Laci to join the other kids. They are all gathered on a mat, watching a movie. "What happened out there?" Maya asks worriedly. I'm sure she heard the voices. That's why she turned on a movie. To block out the sound. "I'll tell you when you come over," I assure her.
