Chapter 1
Atlanta, Georgia March 18, 2013 "Come on, sweetie. Just a little more." Sulem encouraged her patient as she tried to stretch out her leg with ease. "I can't." The young girl, Zoey, breathed out in pain. She stopped where her leg was still bent as she tried to lessen the pain. "Yes you can. You have to do a little bit more improvement than last week." Sulem said, holding her calve and her ankle, getting ready for another stretch. Sulem continued to encourage her patient. The one thing Sulem hated was a patient doubting themselves or giving up. The young girl exhales as she tries to get it as straight as possible. When she reached the breaking point, she stopped. "I can't go any further." she cried. Nodding and accepting the little progress, Sule gently bent her leg back up and sat it flat on the bed Zoey was sitting on. "See, Zoey. Don't give up so easily. Even when you can make at least a small amount of progress and that means a lot. Things like this take time along with the proper care and physical training. Keep one thing in mind though, Zo." Sulem spoke her words of motivation while wrapping the girls leg and setting it back in her brace. "Always stay positive." Zoey smiled and Sulem returned one. After a moment of writing down her patients progress on her slip, Sulem reached out and helped her stand on one leg carefully and grabbed her crutches that rested against the wall. A ding from the bell came from the front as Sulem just about finished helping Zoey get her things together. Mrs. Daniels, the patient's mother, strutted in with a graceful smile on her lips. "How was she today?" She asked, walking towards her daughter and rubbed up and down her back. "It was better than last week's session. I suggest she gets more massaging of the knee to help relieve some pain. By her next appointment, we should have her start walking if she is comfortable with it by that time. Other than that, this beautiful girl is free to go." Sulem smiled. "Thank you, Miss Calderon." Zoey smiled, giving Sulem the best hug he could manage while on crutches as her mother gathered her belongings. "You are welcome and remember to always stay positive and never ever give up." Sulem breaks the embrace and looked at her expectation. "Yes, ma'am." "Come along, Zoey. Thank you, Miss Calderon." Mrs. Daniels smiled and Sulem nods back with a brighter smile. "You're welcome. I'll see you soon." After they left, Sulem went back to her office. She logged into her computer and went to Zoey's file and typed up her progress and placed the slip into another safe keeping file. She sighed out and gathered all her belongings for today. She was just about to leave her office when the door to her office opened. In came John Reynolds, Sulem's boss and owner of this entire therapeutic building here in Atlanta. He was a kindhearted man and always had a soft spot for Sulem. She was far from being blind to know that her boss had some feelings for her. It was all in the look. He was crushing and Sulem just didn't want to cross that line with him. Boss and employee never ended well. Her lips formed into a small polite smile. "Mr. Reynolds, what can I do for you?" She paused on packing to go home and focused on him for a moment. He took a couple of steps into her office and closed the door behind him. He pulled out a file from behind his back and held it out for her. Her brows furrowed in confusion but she grasped the file and read along the tag. Christopher Maurice Brown "Um, who's this?" Sulem looked from the file to Reynolds eyes. "A new case but this is your challenging one. This won't be easy either." Sulem smirked. She loved a challenge and it's been a while since she's gotten a new patient. She opened the file and glazed over the documents. Twenty- four year old male. Birthday is May 5, 1989. NBA star who plays for Atlanta Hawks. Knee injury during half-time mid game. "This is," Sulem paused, not knowing what to say. She was handed a new patient. A famous patient who was well known. Not really, known. I haven't heard of him and I'm a huge fan of basketball. She thought. "Is it too much for you? I can hand it over-" "No!" Sulem cuts Reynolds off quickly along with the shake of his head. "I can take it. It's just shocking. Were we recommended?" Reynolds exhaled a long exhausting breath. "Apparently." He murmurs. Sulem pays him no mind. "This is a big one." She whispers to herself. "It is and you can benefit from this, Sulem. This could take your career to the next level. Think about it." Sulem lookeed away from him and down at the file. He was right. Working alongside a man that's in the NBA could high her chances at a better career path and to be honest, she didn't know if there would be another opportunity to get a chance like that. It was a take or leave. "I'll take it. I can go over the files when I get home." Sulem smiled. Reynolds nods. "And a mental note, watch out for his attitudes and outbursts. They are not pretty and they may make you want to back out but..." He trails off with a knowing look. She smiles in appreciation. "You know that won't back me down. A challenge is a challenge." He smirks. "Indeed it is. Have a good night, Sulem." He turns out to be her office. "You too!" She called out and finished packing. Attitudes are not the main problems that come with being a professional basketball player. They rose with fame. There would be a lot of camera flashing and a few invasions of personal space but if that helps her career, Sulem was going to push through. A strong soul conquers their goals. Atlanta, Georgia March 14, 2013 Game Night Christopher sat in the locker room, tying up his lucky shoes. He sat back up straight to where his back was up against the cold metal of the lockers. Tonight was game night. Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat. He was ready. Ready to win. Stay ready and you don't have to get ready was always the saying he was told as a boy. It stuck with him as glue and as a twenty-four year old man, it was implanted in his system to be better than the rest. His thoughts faded away just as Twan Quincy, a good friend of his, walked into the locker room in his direction. They greeted each other, slapping hands. "You ready for this game?" Twan questioned while fishing for his 'Nike' headband within his gym bag. Once found, he slipped it on. "You know I am." Chris replied snarky as he grabbed his water bottle and took a few refreshing gulps of the cool liquid. "Well, after we win this game, the guys and I are heading out to the bar and getting a few drinks. Probably pick up some nice shapely women in our path. You in?" Chris shrugged, running his fingers through his long blonde curls. He thought about Tasha and her plans on dining out tonight. She was a girl he did not want to hear a mouthful from if he cancels "her" plans on going out tonight. Despite her being his on and off girlfriend. "No, not tonight. Tasha wants to go out tonight and I told her we could after the game." Twan exhaled an irritating breath. "You two got back together? I thought you broke up." Chris sighed with a shrug. "Oh, we did and it was a long break until she wanted to mend things between us. Again. I think she really wants to try this time." "Perhaps she'll allow you to come out with the guys." Twan says teasingly. "I don't need her permission. I'm my own man." Chris glares at his friend in irritation. Muffled whistle sounds and the sound of their coach speaking, stopped all conversation. It was game time. The ball passed his way and Chris quickly shot upward, shooting the ball and landing it into the hoop. The crowd went wild as the home city chanted and cheered for their team. That boosted his confidence and remained focused on the game at hand. It was the third quarter. Fifty to Fifty- nine and the clock had thirty seconds left to spare before the next quarter. Chris took a breath, conjuring up a plan and his eyes remained on the ball as he did so. His opponent-guard he was blocking had the chance to get the ball. Just as he swerved around Chris, the man took the jump and Chris slammed the ball out his hand. One of Chris' teammates caught it and they dribbled across the court and everyone followed down the court. Chris was first down the court and as soon as the ball passed to him, the opposite teammate ran upon him and pushed Chris causing him to fall along with the ball, hitting his knee upon the hard gym floor. He grabbed his knee as soon as the pain shot up. He clutched it, groaning loudly in pain. Whistles were blown and the entire game was paused. Gasps in the crowd as well as shouts. Thumping sounds of people running to him. "Medical Team!" Someone shouted. Chris held tightly for dear life. He wasn't just thinking about his knee but, his career. A career that was probably ending this very second. He forced himself to let the doctors stretch out his leg carefully, he winced in pain at the action. The doctor examined his knee inspecting before looking at the coach who was in the crowd that was currently surrounding him. "This is not good, coach. From what I see with the abrupt swelling, he can't continue on." Chris mentally cursed as he heard the words fly out of the doctors mouth. "I'm good, coach. I can-" "Not a chance, Brown. Get him on the stretcher." His coach ordered hastily in frustration.
