Chapter 1: Uprooted
"Hey, I'm home," I called to my parents.  "Could you come into the living room for a minute?" my dad responded.  There was something in his voice that worried me a bit. My first thought was that something happened to one of my siblings and my heart started to race. I was worried so I rushed to put my bag down and went into the living room where my parents sat waiting for me.  "Is everything okay? Is there something wrong with Finn or Abby?" "No, they are fine. They are in their rooms doing their homework. We asked them not to greet you when you got home today," my mom said.  "Why?" I asked confused.  My brother and sister always greeted me when I got home from work. I am 22 and I own a bakery a few blocks away from here. They always try and see if I brought something back for them and I almost always do. If my parents told them to stay in their rooms when I got home, then something was going on.  "Your mom and I haven't been totally honest with you about finances," my dad stated.  "What does that mean?" I asked.  "Well, you know how your mother wasn't able to conceive for a long time and then we adopted you? Then we had the twins and it was a big surprise. We weren't planning on having any kids after we adopted you because we knew we couldn't afford it. In order to make it work, we had to take out a loan from the bank. We thought that with all of us working, we would be able to pay it off. We have been making monthly payments but we are still barely making ends meet. The bank now has a new owner. Mr. Adair, the previous owner, has put his son, Grayson Adair in charge. Greyson now wants us to pay the rest of the loan back in full," my father said.  "Wait, but that's not fair. There was an agreement and a contract. He can't just change the terms because he feels like it," I responded, my face red with anger.  "Well, Greyson inherited the whole town from his father and can do whatever he wants," my mom chimed in.  "Either way, what he is doing is wrong. I can give you guys more money from my bakery and make budget cuts to save more. I will do everything I can to help." "Greyson gave us a way out of the debt. If we do give him something important to us, he won't make us pay back the money," my father said, putting his head down.  "Okay, what do we have to give him?" "You," my father said, with tears in his eyes.  "Me? Why would he want me?" I was so confused. I have never met this guy before and he wants me instead of money.  "You told him no though right?" They looked at me in silence for a while and then my mom spoke up.  "I am sorry honey, but we can't afford to pay the loan in full. We agreed and promised him that we would tell you today." "How could you?" I whispered.  "I am sorry but we don't have another choice. We asked if there was anything else but he said no. He wants you," my mother continued.  "Well, what if I don't want him? What if I say no?" "Then we will lose the house and be forced to put the twins in foster care," my father said sadly.  I couldn't do that to my brother and sister. I knew what it was like and the memories have scarred me for life. My parents got me out when I five and I was a nervous wreck, but with their help, I got better. When I was 10, they had twins and I was so glad that I could be a big sister to them.  I would do anything and everything for them, even if it meant giving myself to a man I don't know. I looked at my parents and grabbed their hands.  "I will do this. I love you guys and the twins too much to let anything bad happen to you." "I am so proud you," my father said.  I gave them both hugs and then my mother handed me an envelope.  "This is the marriage contract. Once you sign, we will mail it to Greyson and he will handle the rest. He will send someone to come pick you up in a few days since you will be moving in with him," my mother said.  This is not how I imagined getting married. I wanted a flowy white dress and a long veil. I wanted my father to walk me down the aisle to a man that I loved with my whole heart. Instead, I am signing a contract that will make me married to a man I have never met.  I signed the contract and put it in a new envelope. My father went to go mail it while I went to the twins' room. When they saw me, they gave me a big hug and I gave them the cookies that I brought home for them.  I was going to spend the next couple of days with my family. I hoped that Greyson would still let me see them after I moved in with him but I didn't know for sure.  However, the days went by so fast and before I knew it, I was already saying goodbye to my family.  ~~~~ Abby and Finn were crying because they didn't want me to go. I hugged them tight and told them that I loved them. I wished I could've promised them that I would see them again but I couldn't. I went up to my mom and hugged her and she whispered "I love you," into my ear. Next was my dad. He hugged me tightly in his arms and I hugged him tightly back. I was going to miss him too.  I walked towards the car and looked back before I got in. At least my siblings would be okay and my parents would have less to worry about. Even though I didn't want to leave them, I was glad I could make their lives easier. I was really going to miss them.  ~~~~ The car drove away from the only home I have known for 18 years since before that I was I foster care. Greyson sent someone to pick me up. She was a nice lady that was about the same age as my mother. She didn't talk much but her smile and her eyes were kind. She looked sorry for me. Maybe she understood what the situation was and she felt bad that I had to leave my family.  On the drive to the new place, she didn't say a word. I looked out the window, watching the trees and houses as the car rushed by them. As my old life started to fade behind me, I started to cry silently in my seat. I wiped the tears away so the nice lady wouldn't see me crying but she saw anyway.  "I am sure this is hard for you but it's going to be okay. You can call me Auntie Laura and I'll be there to help you if you need me." "Thank you," I responded quietly.  ~~~~ Not soon after our small conversation ended, we pulled up in front of the house. More like a mansion. It was huge and very intimidating. It was 4 stories with big windows and a big front door. The garden in front was full of different kinds of flowers and a beautiful blossom tree.  I got out of the car and Auntie Laura was by my side within seconds. The doors opened up and I was greeted by a boy that seemed about 6 years old. He bounced up to me with a smile on his face.  "Hi, I am Mason Adair! Welcome to your new home, the Adair mansion!" Oh boy. This was going to be interesting.
