Chapter 1: Vivid Dreams
A quick swipe in front of my face leaves me winded. As I back up against the wall a fist lands on the drywall behind me causing it to crack, his fist slightly touching my cheek. Tears begin to swell in my eyes as I stare into his face. He smirks and grabs my chin as if proud of his work. I close my eyes. You are not here. You can’t be. My eyes open to my ceiling in my apartment. The sun rays shining through the crack of the blacked-out curtain. My eyes adjust to my bed and my breathing slows.             “I hate dreams like those.” I mutter to myself as I slowly push off the bedsheets. As I turn on the shower and put out my clothes for work, I glance at the reflection in the mirror. Sometimes it was hard to recognize me since I wasn’t sleeping peacefully anymore. It had been almost three months since I left that terrible excuse of a man, but he still haunts me in my dreams. I let the shower wash off all the sweat from my nightmare and trace of that memory. He was an abuser, an asshole. I never want to think about him again.  I quickly put on my clothes and grab a banana as I head out the door. I look around the yard making sure the way to my car is clear. Paranoia has gotten to me lately, and I hated every second of it. As I drive to work the silence in the car, mixed with the thoughts of the dream last night was excruciating. It was only the ringing of my phone that broke my train of thought. Thank god.             “Hey, mom, what’s up?” She seems silent for a moment. “Has…Kurtis contacted you?” She stammers. A chill sends over my body as my eyes become wide with fear as my hands begin to lose control of the wheel. “No. Why?” I start to panic, trying to keep my eyes on the road ahead.             “Nothing honey. I just…wanted to know.” Is she hiding something from me? “Mom, please. If you know something, tell me. Why did you want to know if he contacted me?”             “He called the house a week or so back and asking where your current address is. I refused to tell him. Just know he is looking for you.” She finishes. My breathing gets heavy with anxiety as I think about the things, he used to do to me. He can’t find me. “He asked a week or so back? How come I am just hearing of this now?” A silence looms over the phone. “I didn’t want to worry you, Lina. Your father and I know how much it took you to leave that jerk.”             “I don’t think he will be able to find me, mom. I will keep an eye out just in case, but next time something like this happens call me!” I replied trying to keep my anger in check. She mumbles in agreement, and we both hang up. I put my phone in my pocket and pull into the mechanic shop. I don’t mind working in the mechanic shop. Most women do not do what I do, I find it makes me more interesting. It was the first job I got moving to this new town, and since I had experience in fixing cars it seemed like the perfect fit. I look around and see the usual guys working on a few cars that are strung up. A few new packages on the ground, waiting to be put away. Familiar faces greet me as I walk through to get to the office.             “Hey Lina, can you put away those new inventories?” My colleague shouts out to me as I pass by. I smirk, “Don’t I always? You never do it!”             “That’s not fair! I have done it a few times!” He protests. Another colleague starts to laugh, “Yeah and you always seem to manage to screw it up somehow Jacob. You remember when you put the batteries next to the cylinder heads? We almost had a catastrophe. Mind you, you never really pay attention to what you’re doing half the time anyway.” I start to laugh when I’m interrupted by a small voice. “Excuse me?” I look over to see a handsome man standing in front of me. Tall with a muscular build, brown locks of hair with beautiful blue eyes. He’s staring at me, waiting for a response. It was only then I realized I had been staring for a bit too long.             “Yes?” I stammer.             “I’m here to order a part for my car unless you have one right now?” He states. I smile quickly, “Sure what is it you are looking for?”             “A distributor cap, and a spark plug.” I turn to go into the shop and office, bringing one of the inventory boxes with me. “I will check on the computer, what model is it?” I begin typing into the database and pull up our inventory list with different models. He pauses for a minute, “A 1961 Lincoln Continental.” I stop typing on the computer and make eye contact almost baffled. “Really? Wow. You like the classics? That car seems hard to come by nowadays.” He nods, “Yes, it is extremely hard to come by. I love the classics. Do you have a favorite?”             “A 1964 Chevy Impala is my favorite, but I am also fond of the 1957 GMC truck.” I smile and continue, “I don’t have these parts on hand as they are older models. But I think I can order it for you. It will just take a few minutes to find a seller, and make sure they’re in good condition. Can you wait a few moments in the chairs out there? I will let you know when I find them. They might cost a bit in shipping and things like that, is that okay?”             “Of course, cost won’t be a problem. I have a car show in a few months that I need to get it ready for. So, whatever you can do, I will be grateful. I will sit out here until you’re ready.” I nod and continue to search for it. After a few minutes with nothing, I almost give up when I finally come across both parts. Yes! I click them into my cart and get ready to tell him when I feel a hand come up behind me and press against my mouth.             “Easy princess.” A familiar voice says. My eyes widen and shock spreads throughout my body. Kurtis. I attempt to scream, but he tightens his grip, and a sharp object is pressed into my stomach.             “Don’t even think about it. Do you know how much you put me through when you ran away from me?” I gulp and try to speak only to be muffled. Why is he here? What does he want? He puts his hand down, “Quiet or I will kill you. Make no mistake about that Caroline.”             “Kurtis…Please. How did you find me?” My voice shakes. “You shouldn’t be here, if any of my colleagues find out what you are doing, they will call the police!” I threaten and my voice begins to rise. He begins to twist my arm, “Stop raising your voice, or we are going to have problems. And you know how much I hate problems.” He presses his lips against my ear and sniffs my hair. “You really weren’t that hard to find little dove. And what I want? Are you seriously asking me that? I want you. I have always wanted you and I thought I made that clear. Yet, you left me. How could you do that to me?”             “I left you because you’d always hurt me Kurtis.” He twists my arm harder, making me squeal in pain. “I loved you. I gave you everything you could want, and this how you repay me?” My face becomes wet with tears, “Stop Kurtis you’re hurting me!” He brings his face back towards my ear, “It isn’t over until I say it is. That is why I tracked you down to find you and tell you that. Co-operate and I can forget this whole ordeal. I’ll chalk it up to a mental breakdown, and we can move past it. What do you say?” What I wanted to say was go to hell. “I-“ Another familiar voice cuts through our conversation from outside, “Did you find the parts yet?” This is my chance, I can tell this guy I need help and it will all be over. Kurtis presses the knife into my stomach harder and whispers, “Act normal. Answer him as you normally would. If you tip anyone off Caroline, today will be your very last day.”             “Yes, I found it! I will order them right away okay?” my voice is shaking. I wonder if he will notice my silent plea. Apart of me wishes he would hear me crying out silently, but another part of me doesn’t want to die.             “Perfect! Should I pay now?” He asks and I hear the chair screeched across the concrete floor. He’s getting ready to walk in here! Kurtis pulls on my arm violently and anxiously, “Don’t allow him to come in. Tell him no.”             “No. It’s okay. Pay when you get them, so you know all the parts are exactly right okay? I can call you later.” I respond not realizing my mistake. A few seconds go by and I can feel Kurtis loosen his grips and smile, “Good girl. Now, where were we-”             “But I never gave you my number yet.” A voice cut off Kurtis. I look up in horror as the man is now standing in front of us in the doorway. He seems confused by my stare, but as his gaze turns towards Kurtis and the knife in my stomach, he begins to understand the situation. Kurtis then moves his arm around my neck into a chokehold position.             “Stay back. Right now.” He warns him. He presses the knife into my stomach harder causing me to groan in pain, so he understands how serious Kurtis is. The man puts his hand up to Kurtis, “Don’t hurt her.”             “I won’t if you leave. Don’t say anything to anyone, just leave.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a badge. “My name is officer Jameson; I am an undercover cop.” He looks at me reassuringly. “I can put you away just for threatening her. So put the knife down, let her go.”  Kurtis tenses up, “You’re a cop? You don’t look like any cop I have seen around these parts.”             “I am undercover. I look like a civilian that is how I catch most criminals.” Kurtis doesn’t release his grip. “Now let the girl go.” He replies seriously.             “So you’re telling me, I could go to jail just for threatening my girlfriend?” He laughs. The officer looks at me confused until I reply, “Ex girlfriend. We are not together anymore, and frankly I wish I never met you Kurtis.” He tightens his grip around my neck so hard that he starts to choke me. I begin to gasp for air. My hands instinctively try to pry his arms from my neck.             “I’m not going to jail. But I am taking her with me.” He slowly drags me back towards the back-office exit with him. The grip on my neck has loosened to a breathable hold but threatening nonetheless. Officer Jameson steps forward, “I can’t let you do that. Let her go now.” He slowly begins to pull out his gun.             “If you don’t back off, I will hurt her. I am not going to jail!” Kurtis yells at him.             “I can’t do that. You think I’m just going to let you take her, and act like nothing happened? No. But if you let her go unharmed, we can lessen your sentence. I can make sure of that.” He explains, slowly raising his gun towards Kurtis. Kurtis stares at the officer and realizes the gun. “Put that down! I will hurt her, I swear it!”             “Kurtis is it?” Jameson asks, “Don’t do something you are going to regret. We can settle this, but if you hurt her you are going to go away for much longer than if you just let this go.” Kurtis grimaces, “Even if I let go…you are still going to throw me in jail.” He tightens his grip again on my neck, choking me once again.             “Unfortunately yes Kurtis, you leave me no choice.”             “If I am going to jail, I can’t have her. And if I can’t have her…then she might as well not have anyone.” He finishes. The shock of Kurtis’s words hit me like a ton of bricks, and so does the pain as Kurtis plunges the knife into my stomach. He twists the blade quickly before pulling it out and pushing me towards the officer.             “No!” Officer Jameson yells as he tries to catch me before I hit the ground. As he looks up to shoot at Kurtis, he catches a glimpse of him running out the door. A metallic taste develops in my mouth as I try to get a look at what’s happening to my body. Two hands press firmly on my stomach to stop the bleeding. “What’s…what’s happening?” I try to whisper as I cough and a red liquid seeps from my lips.             “Shh, its okay. Stay with me okay? You need to stay with me.” He says trying to grab his radio. “I need an ambo at the automobile shop on Main and Seymour stat!” A cold wave rushes over me, like being submerged into a frozen lake. Is this what it’s like to die? “I’m…so cold.” I reply.             “I know it’s cold, you need to stay awake okay? You have to stay with me, help is on the way.” I can hear the anxiety in his voice. Who is this man? I know he may be an officer, but was is it in his job description to care about a girl he doesn’t even know?  Ambulance sirens can be heard in the background coming closer to the shop, but my eyes flutter, as I struggle to keep myself awake. A few moments pass and all I see is darkness.
