Excerpts from the story:

***

While he was still a little disoriented, I took that same lamp, that now had a shattered bulb, and hit him again while he was on the ground. I heard him moan in pain as I tossed the lamp to the floor, telling me that he was still conscious and that I needed to get out of there quickly. I reached into that pocket he had put the key into and pulled it out.

"Julianne! Stop! You don't understand what will happen if you try to get out of here!" I heard him shout, but I didn't care as I opened the door, locked it from the inside again before I shut it behind me.

---

"I assure you, I didn't touch her," Tayler responded back to him.

"You know the consequences if the product isn't delivered in the same condition as it was when purchased." The man snapped at Tayler.

Who would have thought being treated as an object would feel so degrading. It didn't hurt me romantically but it did hurt emotionally to be talked about as if I was some artifact that was meant to sit on a shelf for all of time. As if I wasn't human.

***

Julianne Trina Wilson took off from the only family that she had left, thinking that she would be able to make it on her own in her travels to her grandparents. What she wasn't expecting was when she was almost to her destination, to get drugged, kidnapped, and put on a plane to New York to be placed into an online auction.

Julianne does anything she needs to in order to stay alive, even if that means being cooperative with the sellers/buyers.

What she wasn't expecting, was in this world, if you are no longer wanted by the one who purchased you, for whatever reason that may be, there are only two options for you. Get sold again, or be killed.

Being sold is her goal to survive, but how many times will she have to be sold before she gets away? Will she lose her will to live in the process? Will she get lucky and one of the buyers will be one who sets her free or will death be the only way out?

Would you shut your dumb mouth already!" Kayla yelled at me from the back seat of the car. I was getting ready to shout something back at her when dad chimed in. We've been fighting back and forth with each other for probably the last ten minutes. I'm surprised dad let it go on this long before he said something. It was always mom who would stay silent and dad was the one to break us apart. "Kayla! That's enough from you too! Both of you just stop!" Dad said in frustration at our bickering as he tried to drive down the road somewhere in Arkansas. At least I think we are Arkansas. I don't recall seeing a sign telling us that we had left the state but anymore, it's hard to say. Everything looks the same. Once you've seen the countryside once you've seen it all. It's been about two months since we left home. Dad got into some money troubles apparently and some mafia showed up at the house one night, demanding money or Kayla's hand in marriage. Actually, it started out with either of our hands in marriage to their son but it quickly turned to just Kayla's hand in marriage. I originally thought maybe it was my chance to get out of that shithole of a house and marry into some wealth but one thing led to another and the next thing we all knew, mom's dead, in the kitchen and dad has us both packed into his little compact car driving anywhere but where we used to call home, Eagleville, Tennessee. "It's the truth, Kayla! Dad's losing everything and soon we will be on the streets begging for money! They don't want me, they only want you. I'm an adult, dad, 18 years old. If I want to leave then I have the right to." I said and my dad glanced at me and then back at the road. "I know pumpkin but I still feel that it's my job to protect you and letting you out of the car as if I was just throwing you out like trash just doesn't sit well with me." He said as he turned the car into a gas station with a motel next to it. "You mean like protecting us from the mafia who was brought to our house because of your gambling debt?" I snapped at him. "That's not what I mean." He told me. "No, you just mean, you don't want some sick person to nab me, rape me, and throw me in the ditch somewhere." I practically mumbled to myself so Kayla wouldn't really hear me but I knew dad had. "Why don't you go see if there are any rooms available for the night," Dad said to me, trying to change the subject, and I glared at him. "Seriously?" I asked him in shock. "What?" "You don't want me to leave because you fear I will get hurt yet you are okay with sending me to that creepy-looking motel when the sun is setting, all by myself?" I asked as I pointed my hand to the motel that looked almost deserted with no outside lights on. He looked back over at the building and thought for a moment before he finally turned back towards me. Another reason I just don't know how safe I feel. This isn't dad's thing, running from the mafia, and I feel that he is going to really screw up somehow and everything is going to come crashing down around him. I just have the urge to protect myself even though it really should be him protecting me. "You're right. That wouldn't make sense. I will go, but you can fill up the car and watch your sister." He said and handed me one of his credit cards. "I'm old enough to watch myself, dad." Kayla grumbled. I took the card and got out of the car. He got out and walked over to the motel. I really didn't want to do what I was getting about ready to do but I just have to. I can't stay with him, he's going to end up on the streets. I've been arguing with him for the last few days to just let me leave. I'm thinking the only way I'm going to get out of here is by just leaving on my own without him knowing. If he knew, he would surely stop me. I grabbed the gas nozzle and I put it in the car and started the gas up, flipping the button so it stops when it is full. I put the card in my pocket and went to the trunk of the car and opened it up. "What are you doing Julie?" Kayla asked as she leaned out the window of the car and watched me. "I'm leaving. I'm not going to live on the streets or get myself killed." I told her and she opened the door and came around to me. "You can't leave. You heard dad, it's not safe out there! You saw what happened to mom! They are going to find you and then kill you!" She said to me as the tears started to fill her eyes. She is only 15 years old. I can't imagine being her age and watching some stranger shoot our mother and then be told that I was going to be married to him. She cried for hours after we left home. She cried for so long that it wore herself out and she fell asleep in the back seat of the car. Then the next day, her eyes were so puffy from crying most of the night that dad just got our breakfast at some diner and brought it back to us. She would hardly touch her food and the tears kept silently falling down her cheeks. It was heartbreaking but I, trying to be the strong older sister, did my best not to let it show how much mom's death was hurting my heart. I cried, often, when she and dad were asleep in some trashy motel and I was in the bathroom or in the car because we couldn't find a place to stay. At that time, I thought dad would do what was right. Take us to family or something and we would get this figured out but he's been driving in the wrong direction. Mom's family lives in Kentucky so the fact that we aren't going there just tells me that the only thing he plans on doing is just running. There's got to be something other than running that he could do to fix his screw-ups. Running is going to land him on the streets or be killed by this mafia that is chasing him. Heck, just being homeless alone is probably going to starve him to death. He's not exactly known for his cub scout badges. "Yes I saw and instead of dad trying to find a solution he is just running. He's running with his tail between his legs and he's going to put you and him out on the streets. I'm going back to grandma and grandpa's house." I told her as I pulled out my bag and put it over my shoulder. "They live in Kentucky. How are you going to get there?" She asked me just as the click of the gas pump clicked. "I'm getting cash off of this and I'm taking the bus. I saw a bus stop down the road as we drove past it." I told her, showing her dad's credit card as I took the pump out of the car and put it back. "That's stealing! You can't steal from dad! Besides, you don't know the pin to get the money." Kayla was practically shouting at me. "Dad uses the same pin for all of his cards. He's had me go to a cash machine more than once for him. It's either I use some of it to get out of here and keep myself off of the streets or I let dad spend it trying to hide instead of keeping us sheltered with food or bothering to find a way to take care of his mess," I told her as I started to walk towards the cash machine that was on the side of the building. "Julie, please! I don't want you to go!" She started to whine as she picked up her pace to keep up with me. "Go with me," I said excitedly and looked over at her while the machine was processing. "I...I can't." She said almost worried and looked back to see if dad was coming back yet or not. He's probably inside trying to haggle the price of the room down. That's why most of the time we slept in the car because he didn't want to spend any money if he didn't have to. Imagine that, gambling problem and yet he couldn't spend money. You'd think he would have no problems maxing out his credit cards right away just because he could but surprisingly, he hasn't yet. "Yes, you can. They are going to be following dad, because of these stupid cards, not us. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't following us now as we speak! We split and they won't ever find us because we will be using cash. We have to look out for ourselves now Kayla. Dad caused all of this to start with and you know it." I told her as I shoved the few thousand into my bag and zipped it up. "Dad would be heartbroken." She said, thinking only about him. She's always been like that. She cares so much for other people that I think she would step in front of a moving bus if it meant saving a stranger from getting hit. I think she would do anything she could to save someone else even if she didn't know them. "Dad was never thinking about us, our safety and protection when he gambled away all of our money and then got involved with the mafia," I told her and she just looked so unsure of what to do, kept looking back at the motel to see if dad was coming back or not. She's young and doesn't fully understand what exactly is happening around her. She doesn't realize what all dad's actions have caused. I don't fully understand completely what happened either but I know that it isn't going to get any better by running away from it. Even though I love dad, I can't let him take me down with him. If I expect to have a life not living on the streets then I need to get away and head back to Kentucky to get back on my own two feet. It's the only way that I see at the moment. "I can't leave dad. It will crush him." She told me with tears starting to form in her eyes. I looked over and saw a figure walking out of the motel door. I knew it was dad and that I was running out of time if I expected to get out of here without him stopping me. "Make sure dad doesn't come looking for me and hand him back this card. Don't tell him I took the cash, he will just think he spent it all." I told her as I gave her his emptied card that was now fully maxed out. "I will." She said in a shaky voice. "Whatever happens, remember that even though we have been at each other's throats lately, I still love you. You're my sister and I always will love you." I told her and she sniffled as the first tear fell from her eye. "I love you too." She said as she tried to be strong and hold back the remaining tears. "Once the dust settles, promise me you will find me at grandma's and I will do the same," I told her and she nodded. I reached over and hugged her really tight and then I turned and ran beside the building, away from the gas station. I looked back once I got so far away and saw her talking to dad over by the car. He was looking all over the place as if he was trying to find me. He would have continued to look for me too if it wasn't for Kayla grabbing his arm and persuading him to just continue on. The motel must not have had any rooms or he couldn't get them to come down on the price, because Kayla got into the front seat and dad walked around the car and got in. My heart was breaking to watch them drive away. It caused tears to form in my own eyes but I knew this was best. I knew staying with him was just going to put us on the streets or get us killed. It worries me that Kayla is getting pulled down with him. I wanted her to go with me but she couldn't leave dad and I understand. I just hope that he protects her, something that he obviously wasn't thinking about when he was gambling away all of the money we had and more money that he didn't have. I ran back towards the street when I saw they were long gone. The bus stop wasn't too far down the street but yet far enough down that by the time I got to it, I was really tired and couldn't wait to sit on the bench. I had no idea how long it was going to be till the next bus and I had even less idea of where this bus was going to go. Regardless, the bus would at least take me somewhere that I could start to make a plan on how to get back to my grandparents. It felt like a really long time sitting at the bus stop before the bus finally started to appear down the street. The sun was starting to set, the air felt a little chilled. There wasn't anyone else at the bus stop other than myself so it made me wonder if the bus would see me sitting here so I stood up when it got a little closer. I knew the driver saw me when I saw it start to slow down. The doors opened and an elderly gentleman was driving. I got on the bus and gave him the amount he had asked for. "What town is this?" I asked him after I paid. "Sheridan, Arkansas." He told me. "And where does this bus stop at next? Will it have more routes for me to take to get to Kentucky?" I asked him. "It should. This route takes you to Little Rock." He told me and I just nodded and started back towards one of the seats and sat down. I pulled my bag around and sat it on my lap and looked out the window. My mind wandered to my sister and dad and then back to myself, hoping that I made the right decision to leave. I really hope that I don't end up dead on the side of the street by some sick killer who prays on the ones who are just trying to get from one location to the next. I'm just going to have to keep my eyes and ears open and do my best to make sure that I get to Russellville Kentucky safely.
