Paper dream
Andrew was his name. Tall, with a retarded sense of humor and quite smart in a technical-abilities-kind-of-way, Andrew got my attention from the very first "Hello". I admit it, sure. Keep in mind that he was a sneaky polecat, always watching for his own interests and that I was not so much stupid, but quite lonely at that time and in search of a friend. This is how our story begins. Andrew had a girlfriend back then, one that he treated just like a puppet. He used to control her life without her even noticing it, writing his choices on her path of life like a goddamn meds prescription. I hated that, but of course, never said a word about it. He always thought he knew what's right and wrong for someone, especially for him and Miley, but the fact is he was running away with each day that passed. From him. From the life with her. From everything that could’ve kept him in one place. I should've kept my first impression of him, the one where I thought he's so, so, so boring, talking about politics and economy all the time, subjects that I wasn't into at all. But as I got to know him I started really understanding where he stood and what he was capable of in life. Of course he was a bright dude, with awesome future plans, business oriented and capable of managing people and problems really well if he wanted to. His biggest flaw though was the thing that ruined any small chance of getting that train ticket to "Happiness". The word I would often use to describe Andrew was "chaos".  The chaos in his heart reflected the chaos in his life. When you are hurt and maybe even bleeding, you tend to make a mess everywhere, not even on purpose. So I guess this was the reason why he chose to live a dangerous life, full of crazy risks without any kind of stability. He had some baggage from the past that he never got rid of and it was holding him back just like rocks on the bottom of the ocean.  So we got out for coffee several times and as time went by things started to get darker and darker. I mean some weird stuff started popping out like candy in our conversations and I wasn't happy about it. I started avoiding him more and more, but he was always coming back, claiming he loved me. One day my phone started ringing like crazy and he seemed quite nervous.  - Hey, beautiful, can I see you tonight? Yeah, always the low and charming voice. f**k you, man! - I guess so, what time? - Around 8 PM? - OK, see you then. We went to a really cute restaurant and I must tell you, he looked like hell! Blood shot eyes, dark circles, he could've easily gone out for Halloween and take over candy land. He wasn't talking much, so I started worrying and asking him the usual questions about stress, eating healthy and sleep.  - I… I… Don’t even know how to tell you this without sounding crazy.  - Well, just tell me, you look crazy so might as well explain why… He sipped on his tea, looking from one side to another like a crazy person and suddenly I got really anxious. My heart started pumping blood like a well wired machine and my hands went cold and tingly.  - Last night I was cleaning the apartment…  Andrew was going to move to another country, as he never stayed in one place for more than a few years. He was a nomad at heart although he wouldn’t have admitted it for the world.  - … and I found a note.  His hands were shaking like crazy. I’ve never seen him so messed up, I guess I was also  at the point where my anxiety had its own anxiety, but I frowned in the hopes that I would understand what this was all about. He handed me an old piece of paper that clearly had been through a lot. The paper was yellow and almost soft to the touch and the ink was sinked in it. The words “Chaos brings pain, but in the deepest darkness you will find the brightest light.” - Yeah, I said. OK, that’s awesome, you will get a lot of likes on social media with that quote. What’s the deal? Why are you so freaked out? Jesus… He stopped breathing and stared at me for a couple of seconds and said:  - I found this note, read it and put it on my desk. Suddenly, the note floated and started to burn away and a man appeared from the note’s ashes.  - Hahaha, yeah, right, I said laughing and feeling a lot more relaxed.  - I’m serious, beautiful, stop laughing.  - OK, let’s say I believe you. Then what?  - He asked if I was willing to go in the darkness.  - And what did you say? - I said “no” of course, who wants to go into the darkness?  - I mean, I don’t know what the darkness means so… But I would’ve been curious, you know me…  - Yeah, well I wasn’t.  - And then what? - He kinda… went back to being a note. As a boomerang or a backwards timelapse.  - That actually sounds super cool, why would you be so freaked out?  - Are you serious right now? What if it was death? Or some weird sign that I will die or something…  - So what? I mean he went back so you’re good, but also… why am I holding the paper? Damn it!  I dropped the note on the table like it was cursed or something and Andrew said:  - I don’t know what to do with this, I haven’t been sleeping the whole night and I think I’m going just straight up crazy.  I was looking at Andrew, this strong and tall man that I almost fell in love with, whom I thought nothing would break. And here it is. The thing that breaks him to madness: a piece of paper. I can’t say I believed him as Andrew sometimes lied or exaggerated a lot of things in his life. So after a few minutes of quiet time, I decided to step up.  - Look, if it helps, we’ll just throw away the note like nothing ever happened and that’s that.  - Oh, I tried that.  - And?  - It just popped up in my pocket back.  - No way... I still didn’t believe him, but I was intrigued. I was always scared of things that I can’t explain, but this time I felt like I had some control over it.  - OK, you’re just tired, maybe you just thought you threw it away and it popped back into your pocket.  - Oh my God, he said kind of desperate. Let’s go and I’ll show you.  - OK.  He took the note and put it in his wallet, after that we paid our drinks and left the restaurant. We were walking and suddenly Andrew took my hand into his and squeezed it. I felt him being genuine so I responded to the squeeze and left his hand into mine as we were heading towards our cars.  - Look, a trash can, we'll throw away the note here and you will see that it will pop up again in my wallet by the time we get to the car.  - Oh, c’mon, I’m sure you drank too much or something last night…  He pulled out the note from his wallet and gave it to me. I threw it away like it was nothing and left him staring at the trash can. - C’mon, Andrew, it’s just a piece of paper with an awesome quote that will get super popular on the internet in a few days, you’ll see. I already have the image in my head…  He seemed a lot more calm and relaxed after I made a few more jokes and when we got to our cars I told him to check his wallet again, just to see if the note reappeared there. Although of course I was 100% sure that it didn’t, Andrew was just being Andrew.  - It’s not here, he said with an instant relief. - Well, I told you… There must’ve been an explanation for what you saw. You probably got up in the middle of the night and had a dream about it, thought it was real and got freaked out.  - Yeah, maybe…  He tried to kiss me, like he always did, but I dodged it and gave him a kiss on the cheek instead.  - Go sleep, I think you’re tired and not thinking straight.  - OK, love…  He gave me a look like he was in love with me, but all I kept thinking about was Miley.
