(Completed)

Lois McKinley grew up as a hybrid among wolves. Though she was protected from the scorn that follows her species, she has managed to become the first female to rise among the ranks in her pack and that had nothing to do with her father being the Alpha.

To prove her worth, Lois decides to participate in the Rival Games. A brutal tournament where the best of the best warriors, all over the country, fight to the death for honor and a chance to join the King's army and win the favors that come with it.

But Lois never imagined she'd meet her mate there of all places. Nor did she ever think there was a chance he'd be the Alpha King. A Lycan and the most feared man in the country.

As Bonds are made and the Games begin Lois soon realizes not everything is as it seems in the Kingdom. Something sinister is brewing and Lois is yet to realize that she just might be in the center of it all.

Prologue
☾ 18 years ago... Caleb dug inside the toy chest for his train. He picked it up and carried it over to Kaden and Jax who watched it with otherworldly awe. It was a pretty nice train. It was red and it made tooting noises on the tracks every time it turned a corner. "I heard your mom had the baby a couple days ago. My mother was talking about her during dinner last night," Kaden said. Caleb brought out the remote control and place his train on the tracks that went all across his room. "Yeah, I asked Mother to put her back but she said no," Caleb huffed. "So I guess I'm stuck with her." "I always wanted a sibling," Jax said absentmindedly. Bright innocence glittering in his eyes under the soft light from the crystal chandelier above them. Caleb looked at his best friends and scoffed. "Trust me you don't. She cries all the time, poops and throws up everywhere." Kaden's nose scrunched up in disgust, "That's gross." "I know." Caleb pressed a button on the train and it moved forward tooting it's horn as it went. "You could have my sister if you want but I think my parents would be sad. They have a sort of attachment to the thing." Kaden c****d an eyebrow, "You don't like your sister?" "She's alright, I guess." He gave the controller to Jax whose smile brightened instantly. "I just don't like that my Dad is spending more time with the baby than he is with me. We were supposed to go running today but he forgot." "If he did forget, why didn't you just remind him?" Caleb glared at Jax. "That's not the point. He shouldn't have forgotten me in the first place. It was always me and him. Now it's me, him and Lois." "It sounds to me like you're jealous." Caleb narrowed his eyes at Kaden. But he was right he was jealous. Jealous that every time that baby laughs their faces lit up. Or how they'd coo as her big eyes stared up at them and her tiny arms reach up for them. He felt as if he was at the outside looking in and it hurt him that his father forgot him especially. They were always close. Slowly, he could see that he was losing his father and that frightened him. "Caleb!" His mother's melodious voice found him in his room. Caleb climbed onto his two feet and sprinted to his parent's room two doors away from his. She was sitting in a rocking chair on the balcony, looking out as the sun bowed lowly over the horizon and the moon slowly crept in like a king ascending his throne. His mother was a beauty, dark hair, full pouty lips and grey eyes like her son's... and now Lois. Her hair was in a messy bun and she was wearing her nightgown, Lois clinging to her chest. When the baby's eyes fell onto her brother's, her eyes gleamed and she let out a mirthful giggle that echoed around the room. Caleb stuck out his tongue at her as he got closer and she giggled louder. His mother laid eyes on him and a small smile graced her lips. She looked different. Not good. Her lips were dry, she had dark circles under her eyes and she was paler than usual. Caleb could sense something was wrong with her. It started three days ago, after Lois was born. Dad told him she was just tired after giving birth but she looked worst today. Was that normal? "My sweet boy," His mother croaked. She sounded as if she swallowed a bag of sand. Caleb took her outstretched hand in his. "How are you? Are you playing nice with Jax and Kaden?" Caleb nodded. "I did what you told me to. I let them get a turn with my brand new train. Just for a little while though." His mother chuckled. "Just like your father." She looked down at Lois, caressing her rosy cheeks. She sighed and leaned into her mother touch. "I know it's hard for you, Caleb. You might feel neglected now that Lois is here. It's not that we love you any less, son. Lois is a baby and she needs a lot of attention so she won't get into trouble. It doesn't mean we will ever forget you." Caleb smiled sheepishly scratching the back of his neck. "You heard what I said with Kaden and Jax, did you?" His mother laughed at that. "Caleb, I am not a wolf and my power doesn't allow me to see things that I am not there to witness. It's just that I was once in your shoes." Caleb c****d his head to the side, "Aunt Hilda?" His mother nodded, "When she arrived I was furious, I hated her actually. I didn't understand what was so fascinating about her, she did absolutely nothing." Caleb giggled. "But as we got older, I realize that I never hated her. She was always apart of me somehow. A sibling's bond is a strong one, Caleb. And I want you to cherish this one. Protect her, never let anyone hurt her. Would you promise me that you would?" Caleb looked at his sister again. A smile stretched out on her face, she looked so innocent, so happy, so out of place among the shadows and the monsters that creep outside the pack's walls. The walls he would soon one day pledge himself to protect. He knew then that his jealousy didn't matter, he would've done anything for Lois no matter how much he despised the attention she is getting. She was his blood and he had loved her from the day he first held her in the pack hospital. Lois's grey eyes bored holes into his own. It was as if she knew the thoughts swarming in his head. Caleb reached out and drew a small circle on her pink cheeks, she giggled sweetly and reached out for him. Caleb smiled back genuinely. "I promise, mother." His mother's smile lit up her face and Caleb couldn't help but reciprocate it. She made everyone around her happy. "I can see you both doing wonderful things in the future. You need each other to get ther-" She went into a coughing fit. Caleb waited for it to pass but it never did. She heaved over coughing and hacking into her hand, then he saw blood. It was all over her, some had gone on Lois. Caleb plucked the baby out of his mother's arms just as she fell out of the chair. "Y-Your--father!" Caleb came out of his stupor and went to the door, Lois in his arms. "Dad! Dad! Something's wrong with mom!" His father appeared at the door the next second. He looked past them both, eyes finding his wife curled up in a ball, blood pooling around her. He ran for her. "No, no, no, no. This can't be happening!" Next thing he knew, Caleb was in the far corner of the room, crouched down with Lois to his chest. There were men in coats and briefcases running into his parent's room. Pack doctors. He recognized the Beta and his wife there as well, Jax's parents standing beside his mother. She was carried to her bed, clothes and sheets stained crimson red. Her breathing became haggard. Lois was crying, salty tears staining his blue shirt. Caleb gently swaddled her. "It's okay, Lois. Everything is going to be okay." He tried to reassure her but he didn't believe it himself. His cheeks were stained with tears too and he didn't know what to do. Everything just became louder. The heavy footsteps, the breathing of his dying mother, the shouts and cries from his panicking father, Lois's crying. It was deafening, chaotic. And he couldn't do anything about it. "Shhh-" He didn't want her to see this, to hear the ruckus happening in the room. So he sang to her... "Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire The war outside our door keeps raging on Hold onto this lullaby even when the musics gone, gone Just close your eyes, the sun is going down You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound..."
