I - Packing
Serene’s POV "Serene, gather your belongings. Now is the time to pack your belongings and store them in the large bag under your bed. Place all of your essentials there and leave the rest behind. We'll have to vacate the premises on Monday. While packing, my mother Dina remarked, "Don't forget to bring your documents; you'll need them when you transfer to another school." Today is Friday and I feel so excited. I am so happy and I cannot feel any sadness now maybe it still not sinking into my mind that everything that is happening right now is no good but just imagine we are going to transfer to another school. Isn’t cool? I’m excited to go to school this school year. To think that my school has its own locker, a big gym, a cool cafeteria and so more. There I will meet the love of my life. I giggled while thinking all of those things. You can't blame me because this is my first visit to the city. I spent eighteen years of my life in our province, which isn't to suggest that living here is horrible; in fact, I'm quite satisfied with my life here. Invigorating and relaxing I enjoy living here because it is where I was born, but I am also excited to experience something new. When I saw my dog approaching me, wagging its tail and sticking its tongue out the side of its mouth, my smile faded. Oh, my goodness! I have to give my dog some water because he is thirsty. "How about Pica? Will we be able to bring him with us? " I asked. I'm talking about my dog. Pica is my friend since I was a child, and I can't picture life without him. "I'm sorry, Serene, but we won't be able to bring him." My mother said, "Animals are not permitted to travel on the bus." “But he is our dog and he is part of the family." I sobbed into tears as I murmured, "How terrible of us to leave him here alone." I'm too sensitive. I cry over the tiniest of things. My heart is so fragile and I'm too easy to be offended. This can’t be! I already foresee things if we leave him here alone. He will starve to death and I can’t let that happen My mother gently touched and elevated my brow. She said, "I'm sure he'll understand." I move my hand away from hers. “No mom. He will never understand why we are going to leave him alone,” I said, my eyes welling up with tears. “If we can only bring him why not but we have no choice Serene. Don’t worry I’ll ask Mr.Pedro to take care of him and to feed Pica every day so he will not starve to death," she said with assurance When my parent company was not yet bankrupt, Mr.Pedro was one of our most faithful employees. I don't trust him, even though I know him; he's a drunkard who enjoys eating dog flesh, so who knows if he'll murder my Pica and eat it for supper. Hell no! “I do not think it is a good idea mom. Mr-” “Why? Do you know where you're going to give Pica? Do you know someone who would like to adopt Pica? " she said, interrupting. I just looked down . Yes, I have friends, but I don't believe they would be willing to adopt him. “See?" she added as she continued packing her belongings. "You are arguing with me with no backup solutions. Do not question my decision unless yours are better. I told you to always remember that, Serene." I go outside to inhale some fresh air and try to calm down myself but my tears can't help to begin to fall. I cannot leave my best friend behind. Pica who follows me outside is now sitting in front of me and looking at me directly. I sat beside him. Oh, my poor pica! “Come here, my buddy!” I called him, and he sprang into my lap right away. I stroke his soft hair and say, "I'm going to tell you something, but please don't be furious at me." Pica is a ten-year-old golden Labrador retriever. “I and my family are going to move out to a place that is very very far. We have to take transportation and those buses won’t allow you to get in. I know it sounds so selfish but we are going to leave without you Pica,” I said and hugged him He growls as if he understands what I'm saying, which makes my heart sink. “I know my Pica. I know you want to come with us. I know you are afraid to be alone but we have no choice if we only have a car but my dad already sold it,” I said, my voice mournful. I'll do everything if I can only fly. I'll fly with Pica, but I don't have the power or the wings to do that. I am just a human. A normal human. I looked above wanting to sight the sky but the branches of our tamarind tree are blocking the view. I just realized that the tamarind tree is full of fruits but it is still unripe. With all my life I have never enjoyed the fruits of this tree and I do not know why when in fact it is only thirty seconds walk from our house. Maybe the tamarind tree does not want to share its fruit like what has been said in its mythology story. Oh, have you heard the story of this fruit? In the Philippines, we call it Sampaloc it is about a young lady who was cursed because of her stinginess and those fruits is like her finger that she used to point to someone with her arrogance. “Serene! Mom is calling you. She said to finish packing your things! ” I turned to face the person who was yelling at me. It was Sienna, my sister. Sienna is two years older than me. They said she is more beautiful between the two of us and I hate every time they compared me to her. I know she is far away better than me in everything but they don’t have to embarrass me like you know we are not the same. We are two distinct individuals. . Not because she can do it is I can do it too. That is wrong because I believe that every person is unique, someone can lift a car but not everyone can lift it. If only they understood what I'm saying, but alas, they don't. “What are you looking at? We are all busy and you are just sitting there? Get up and help! ” she said to me. I swiftly get to my feet. “I’m sorry.” I apologized She just rolled her eyes and turned her back “Come Pica help me pack our things.” I said as I walked into the house with Pica.
