Chapter I
~
Rain It was almost night time, the sun was setting with alluring beauty. It dispersed a lovely red color mixed with orange and yellow streaks. The colors exploded like fireworks and stretched for miles across the sky. It looked as if the sky was lit on fire. This breathtaking scenery gave me goosebumps while I was feasting my eyes upon it. It was an unforgettable view, I thought to myself as I was staring out the car window, sitting next to my best friend, Stacey in the passenger’s seat, on our way to a dear friend’s party. I wasn’t technically invited, but I came anyway. If it wasn’t for Stacey, I would stay at home, baking, maybe reading some books or figuring out a way to get on the last nerve of the nearest person in my zone. That poor person is usually either my father or Caleb if he’s staying for the night with me. He’s my boyfriend– obviously, we don’t let random people stay at our home. In a way, we are a conservative family. Speaking of my boyfriend, he mentioned that he wasn’t coming with me since he wasn’t on very good terms with Noah– the party host, which leaves me in a tighter spot because handling a drunk Stacey on my own is a catastrophe. Unluckily for me, she was invited and she couldn’t turn it down thus, dragging me with her to drive her drunk ass home. I could see Noah's house from a great distance. It was luxurious and had a unique exterior design. It had two small old-fashioned circular balconies, positioned above each other, having a suitable space between them in addition to a regular front balcony on the second floor next to the circular balcony. Unlike it, the front balcony had decent space, practically enough room for a good number of people to sit on. As we approached his place, I could see more clearly the security guys he had at his gates. They checked every person separately before allowing them to enter the house. Does this kid think he’s a celebrity or something? How many is he inviting? I wonder. Stacey drove through his driveway. It had recessed lighting and a small sidewalk on which he grew various kinds of plants, trees, and flowers. To be fair, it was a pleasant sight. The trees had tiny colored lights on their branches to light the way for the people who drove at night along with the recessed lighting. The garage was very large. It resembled a single-story parking lot. The place was flooding with cars everywhere. There was barely any parking spots left. “We are late,” Stacey said in distress. “We should’ve come earlier,” She continued. “That’s a sign that we should go back.” I tried... “Oh really?” “Yes, I haven’t heard god speak that loud in a long time.” "We've talked about this, Rain." Suddenly a security guard popped into Stacey window interrupting us, to ask if she needed help parking her car. “Oh! that would be great.” No need, really! “Thank you, kind sir,” said Stacey. I opened the door and got out of the car, careful not to cause any wardrobe malfunction since I wore a floral, off shoulder short sleeve knot cuff dress that was high above my knee and loose fitting, so the occurrence of accidents was very probable. I planned on wearing jeans and a crop top, but that wasn’t going to do with Stacey. She wanted to flirt with the boys there and covering up wasn’t her go-to flirting technique, no matter how many times I try to convince her that I have a boyfriend. She gave him the keys to her car and threw him a flying kiss making him low-key blush and drop his gaze to the ground. The guy was trying to act tough, yet failed. Devious Stace. “Hurry up! I don’t want to miss the good part,” Stacey whined. I picked up my pace, jogging in my sandals and hoping that I didn’t rip them. On following Stacey into the house the loud music hit hard the cerebellum of my brain. I felt pangs in my head. Not used to noisy places since I spent most of my life in a quieter environment. Louder places posed a threat to the drums of my ears. People were dancing at every corner of the room and enjoying themselves. It looked like it was a well-organized party. There was even a small bar that served beverages to the people without having to pay. Noah must have spent so much on this. Rich kids these days. “Let’s dance, Rain!” Stacey shouted above the music. “You go dance. I’m going to have a drink,” I shouted back. She nodded and walked away towards the people who were dancing. I glanced aimlessly through the crowd before turning my gaze back to the bar. I caught a pair of cloudy grey eyes staring curiously at me. I felt the unease right away, but I pretended not to notice his intense gaze as to avoid catching unwanted attention. I determinedly walked to the bar fixating my gaze on it and avoiding eye contacts with anyone. I just want this night to end quickly without causing complications. I sat on the bar stool chair tucking my dress over my thighs to cover them a little bit more and put my bag over them. The bartender advanced towards me. He rested his elbows on the bar table and said, “What can I get for you lovely lady?” “Uh, coke.” “Just coke?” “Yes, I’ll go with that.” He went to bring me my coke. I stole a quick glance at the spot where I saw the pair of grey eyes staring at me; however, he wasn’t there. in fact, he was nowhere to be seen. I could’ve just imagined seeing him, but I doubt it. “Here is your coke.” The bartender handed me my coke. I flashed him a nice faint smile and looked in a different direction. He returned to his co-workers seeming uninterested. Good. Mission accomplished. I opened the lid of my coke and sipped on it to hear my name being called abruptly by Stacey that I almost spilled the coke on my not-so-cheap-yet-still-cheap dress. “Rain!” I shifted in my seat so that I was facing her. She was out of breath from dancing. She took a seat next to me and started talking about something, but I zoned out as soon as she started because I caught the eyes of another creeper. He wasn’t the grey-eyed man, but still, he gave the chills. He was a man in his latest twenties wearing a black leather jacket that had secret pockets for hiding weapons. His belt had one too. One of the perks of having your father as the pack officer. I know a creeper when I see one. The security surely did a great job on their check-ups. After thinking for a moment, perhaps he’s good at hiding these weapons or maybe paid them enough to keep their mouth shut. He looked like someone who would do this. I tried to break his gaze, but there was something that made it so hard. He had nice looks and everything, but it wasn’t that. He wasn’t from my pack so he had to be either on close ties with someone in my pack or a rogue trespassing from a different pack to cause trouble. We don’t trade with other packs and rarely have visitors thus, I presume that he’s the second possibility. "Have you heard what I said?” Stacey’s voice crashed my train of analysis. "Sorry, the music is too loud. Repeat it, please!” "I was saying that you should go talk to him." "To whom?" "To the dude you were just staring at." “Are you kidding? Just look at the way he’s dressed.” “What? I like it.” “I don’t. He's dressed like a rouge.” "Don't play coy with me, Rain. I can tell by the look in his eyes that he is interested in you." “How many times do I have to remind you that I have a boyfriend and I would like to stay faithful to him?” “This stays between us. I’ll make sure he doesn’t know.” “Don’t drag me into unnecessary drama, Stace. Plus, I’m not a cheater,” I insisted. “I mean. The guy is a snack. You’re going to regret this later.” The guy sat in a corner eyeing us rigorously. “I will not cheat,” I repeated, emphasizing the word ‘not’. “That’s why I’m never dating anyone.” She shook her head. “You couples are really boring.” We sat in silence for a few minutes which for some reason felt like hours to me. I exhaled deeply and opened the zipper of my bag looking through it for my phone. I found it lying next to my keys. I grabbed it, looking at the time to see that it was 10:00 pm. If my father hadn’t had overtime today, he would’ve called asking why I was so late. Being the pack officer and everything he hates when I come home later than 10:00 pm. He’s always forewarned me about walking in the streets at night, but I guess today I’m breaking the rules. What’s the worst that could happen from breaking it for just one day? He had a case of trespass that kept him at work for extra hours. From a pack I think is called Lycan Hill. I’ve heard a lot about it from my Father since I was a kid. He’s always warned me from even mentioning its name to strangers. Some of their members trespass other pack’s territories and steal the prettiest of their girls to offer them to their Alpha. He hoped he would find his mate after living for thousands of years, just to lift his curse, nothing more. Who knows what he would do to her after the curse is lifted. However, this was all rumors. It could be all a myth, no one knew if that really happened or not. My father can be overdramatic sometimes. But what was a hundred-percent true is that not even the largest, wealthiest packs dared to oppose Lycan Hill. He'd made a reputation for himself that scared off anyone who tried to mess up with him. I sipped on my coke, zoning out and thinking of how I was going to explain this to my Father if I came later than him on his overtime case. I was worried that might happen. I wouldn't just get myself in trouble, but Stacey too. I looked through the crowd for Stacey who apparently went back to dancing. I was interrupted by a voice, snapping my attention to him. He'd probably want to flirt. “You have a nice figure and a nice face too. What’s your name, hun?” Just as I thought... I was about to say the infamous 'I have a boyfriend' reply, but stopped when I saw his face. he was the one with the grey eyes I saw from earlier. So I wasn't imagining things after all. But what caught my attention even more was how different he looked, dressed and behaved. He was from a different pack. I had my doubts, but I wanted to confirm it. "Which pack are you from?” I decided to ask. “I’m from Lycan Hill, but don’t jump into conclusions. I’m not here to kidnap anyone. I’m just looking for a rogue from my pack.” He zoned out for a second and his eyes became distant looking straight into the crowd behind me as if he was mind linking with someone there. I followed his gaze but found everyone busy dancing or drinking. No one was actually communicating with him. “So What do you think? Wanna exchange numbers?” He asked, snapping my attention back to him. “What makes you think I trust you?” “No. I don’t think you trust me and I don’t think you should, honestly. I just want to get to know you.” “I’m sorry, but I have a boyfriend.” I pulled the ‘I have a boyfriend card’ and prayed that he would lose his interest in me. “No, it’s cool. We could be friends.” “What makes you so interested in me?” “I just want to find out about your personality to see if it’s as pretty as your face.” From the way he spoke, I was unsure of his true intent. Is he really trying to make friends with me? Or did he make a bet over me with someone? The possibilities were countless, and I had that feeling of distrust that kept swirling in my stomach towards him. I tried to end this conversation and escape by pretending that I’d gotten an important text. “Oh, my boyfriend just texted me. He said that he’s waiting for me outside. It was nice meeting you, but I got to go now.” I waved at him and slid down the stool chair, making my way through the crowd to the nearest hiding spot, adequate for me to call Stacey and rush her over. I found a flight of stair that led to the second floor. Perfect. I took the stairs, climbing to the second floor to see that it mainly consisted of bedrooms and a small path that I wasn't sure where it led to, so I decided to find out for myself. There was a chance that it could make a decent hiding place. As I walked through the path, I could hear faint kissing noises, giggles and familiar voices emitting form one of the two bedrooms. I understood that it was none of my business, but I decided to put my ear against the door and listen closely, because I was almost certain I heard a familiar voice. My suspicions aroused even more as I listened. I eventually decided to open the door and see who it was. Worst case scenario, I would apologize saying that I thought the room was empty. It was a risk, but I had to do it. I hesitated for a minute while gripping the door handle, until I finally opened it. However, what I saw made my eyes widen and my heart sink...
