Chapter 1
“Nina! You don’t want to be late to your own party, do you?” My Mom’s shrill voice startles me out of my daydream. I stand in front of the full length mirror in my bedroom, examining my appearance. I have no idea why I chose a pink dress for my 17th Birthday party. I don’t even like the colour pink; my favourite colour is orange. My short, brown curls dance on top of my shoulders, the earrings my parents gifted me sparkling through the strands of hair. Despite the colour, my dress sits perfectly on my body; tight at the waist but flowing out like a princess dress, stopping at my knees to show off my toned calves. Satisfied that I look presentable, I take a deep breath and leave my bedroom. “Nina!” Shouts my Mom, even louder than before. “I’m coming, Mom.” “Finally, let’s go or else we’ll be late.” “Isn’t it fashionable to be late to your own party?” I retort, sarcasm coating my every word. “Not when we are paying for it!” I roll my eyes. I don’t know why my parents decided to throw this party if it was such trouble, they have never been the type to spoil me anyway. I would have been more than happy to just hang out with my boyfriend Jacob, and my friends. Without saying another word, my Mom exits the house, leaving behind only the stench of her disdain. My Father appears from the kitchen and smiles at me shyly. “You look nice, Nina. Let’s get going before your Mother gives herself an aneurysm.” He sighs. Feeling less than enthused, I get my handbag from the kitchen and leave the house, locking the door behind me. Bobby, my little brother, is already sitting in the back seat of the car, his smiling face poking out of the open window. His innocence and joy lift the cloud that had been hanging over my head. “Wow, you look like a real princess, Nina, like the ones in the movies.” He gasps as I slide in beside him. “Thank you, Bobby. You’re looking rather dashing yourself! Did you get all dressed up just for my party?” “Well, yes, but it’s also my first grown up party. I have to dress to impress.” “All of the girls will be fighting over you.” I whisper, sending a wink his way. For a ten year old boy, he has way too much confidence, and too much concern about the girls his age in this town. Bobby is the best thing to ever happen to this family, even my parents would agree. He makes me laugh every day and brightens up even the worst days. I can’t imagine life without him. As we drive through our home of Fairhope, Alabama, I admire the scenery that our town has to offer. The streets are all lined with trees, each of them boasting beautiful shades of orange and red. Old buildings and clocks are the signature look, giving the town a magical feel. People walk in the evening sun to enjoy the Autumn weather. This is my favourite time of the year; I have always loved the fact that I have my birthday to celebrate in Autumn too.  We pull up outside the Old 72 Grill and my stomach erupts with butterflies. I can already see through the windows that there are a lot of people here, more people than I would have invited myself. I can’t be surprised that my Mother would invite half of the town to a party that she didn’t want to have in the first place, she cares too much about what people think of her. “Oh gosh, there’s so many people! Let’s go, Nina.” Squeals Bobby. His excitement rubs off on me and I follow him out of the car. He slides his hand into mine and we walk into the Grill together, our parents following behind. I can sense how nervous and excited Bobby is, his emotions reflecting my own. The little bell that hangs above the door rings as we walk in. Everyone inside turns around, erupting into cheers and applause when they see me. There are so many people that I don’t know where to go or who to talk to first. “You’re finally here!” I’m taken aback by Jacob kissing me on the cheek and whisking me away. I look over my shoulder, worried about Bobby, but see that he is already talking to a young girl who seems to be blushing over whatever it is he is saying. “Happy birthday, Babe. Tonight is going to be the best party ever!” Exclaims Jacob, slurring his words a little. “Thanks.” I groan. “Have you been drinking?” “Oh, just a little, this is a party after all.” Jacob leads me to the table in the corner of the Grill. All of my friends are there and seeing them makes me forget about Jacob’s tipsy state. I let go of Jacob’s hand and rush to my best friend, Bianca. I hug her tightly, feeling more excited now than I have all evening. Bianca and I have been best friends since we were five, I have never had a birthday without her since then. “Happy Birthday!” She beams. “You look so beautiful, Nina.” “Thank you, so do you.” She pulls me into the seat beside her and I greet the rest of our friends who are also seated around the table. A large jug of lemonade sits on the table and Jacob pours me a glass. “Chad added a little something to the lemonade.” He winks. I look at Bianca in shock, but she just smiles and raises her own glass. I notice now that everyone at the table seems a little tipsy, not just Jacob. I guess one drink can’t hurt, it is my birthday after all. I just can’t have too much; if my parents find out that I am drinking they will make my life hell. I sip on my drink slowly and relax into the evening. There’s never a dull moment when we are all together. I laugh so hard that I ruin my makeup, and there’s always some gossip about somebody at school. After some time, I excuse myself from the table, figuring that I should greet some of the other guests too. Jacob stands as I do, wrapping his arms around my waist, his face mere inches from mine. “You haven’t given me a kiss yet.” He frowns. Not wanting to be rude, I give him a swift kiss on the lips. I have never been one to display my affections with Jacob in front of my parents, but with Jacob being drunk, I don’t want to cause a scene. Moving to scan the room, the first person I see is Portia, my Boss. After school and on the weekends, I work at the Grill, saving as much money as I can and giving some to my parents. As usual, she has a sour expression on her face, working behind the counter. I can imagine that she wasn’t too happy to have to work my party, so I decide to go find someone else to talk to. “Nina, Nina.” I see Levi in the distance, waving frantically to get my attention. I squeeze through all of the bodies blocking my path, arriving in front of Levi with a sigh. “Hey.” I smile. “Thanks for coming.” “Of course. Happy Birthday, you look gorgeous, as always.” “Thank you.” I blush at Levi’s words. Not because they have an effect on me, but rather, they make me a little uncomfortable. It has been obvious since I started working here that Levi has a crush on me, but I don’t feel the same for him, and he knows I’m with Jacob. Nevertheless, he’s a nice guy, someone I’m glad to have as a friend. After talking to Levi and a few other guests, the food begins to arrive. Simple baskets of party food are placed on every table: fries, cocktail sausages and sliders. I return to my table and help myself to the miniature food. Jacob is even more drunk than before. I try to encourage him to eat some food, but he won’t listen. I leave the table as soon as I am finished eating, the drunken state of my friends tainting the night. “Nina, Mommy says I have to go home now.” Sulks Bobby, grabbing my arm. “It is past your bedtime, you know. Have you had fun though?” “I had the best time!” “Well then, try to be happy, there will be plenty more parties to come.” “Ok, bye, Nina. I love you.” “I love you more.” My parents wave from the door and I watch as Bobby skips over to them. “Oh, and Nina…” “Yeah?” “You were right, all of the girls were fighting over me.” I shake my head with laughter. If Bobby is this charming now, what is he going to be like when he’s a teenager? Turning back to my table, I see that my friends have all disappeared. I move through the Grill trying to find them, but they are nowhere to be seen. “Levi! Have you seen Jacob and Bianca?” I ask. “No, sorry.” Feeling a little lost and out of place at my own party, I go outside for some fresh air. Maybe I should have just left with Bobby and my parents. This wasn’t such a great party after all. I hear some giggling and I follow the noise. My heart beats out of my chest and my knees go weak when I see who the noise was coming from. At the side of the Grill, Jacob and Bianca are making out, and they don’t look too guilty about it either. “What the Hell?” I shout, causing both of them to snap their heads in my direction. “Oh fuck.” Mumbles Bianca, pulling down her dress. “Nina, it’s not what you think.” My stomach churns and my chest burns. How could they do this to me? And on my Birthday too! Not wanting either of them to see me cry, I turn around and begin running. I run in my heels, not caring about the pain, praying that I make it home without being seen by anyone. I can’t believe this is happening right now. What did I do to deserve this?
