Prologue
"I never knew my life would change until that day came. The day I grew to be so close to death." At the age of seven years old Emery lost her mother. Pain left by her absence serving as the reason for her father feeling just as distant. You could ask Emery how anything but death could feel so far away. After all one would say death closed the connection between two human beings, but her answer would be far from simple. In Emery’s eyes death could be displayed in more forms than one. For an example love and death which secretly go hand and hand. As losing one forces the other to play its part. Leaving a soul like her father to die while still breathing life. Not only did she lose her mother and father, but would live to face torment by being different than others. For fate had chosen to give everyone but her a proper identity. Common knowledge being that you received your wolf at the age of ten, and Emery’s sad reality as she did not. The result caused her to immediately be sought out as an outcast within their society. Much suffering she’d deal with for those few years that fate played it’s chaotic tune. Her life would start as complicated as an rubrics cube that couldn’t be solved; though little did she know it would stand for something much greater. And the different colored patterns of her life would form, creating a path that would’ve never been imagined. Now 18 years old she is known as the girl without a wolf. Emery spends her days watching everyone play around in their wolf forms. For eight lonely years, she kept distance with everyone around her. Growing envious as the days pass trying to find the piece of herself which at the time still remained missing. The thought of her own mental companion was anything but disappointing. Yet by being so different, she risked the feeling of resentment from herself and peers. After all wolves were the soul foundation of their entire kind. How could someone without one, be a part of them? And the one person that didn't make her feel completely worthless in life, was the very one who had raised her. But even he couldn’t fully devote his love to his only daughter, for she reminded him of his true love. This goes back to what death truly is. For Emery’s father, not having a mate meant half of himself was stuck grieving. Though trying to hide these painful feelings; he’d fail being the father his wonderful daughter truly deserved. It was to difficult for him, Emery knew. By looking exactly like her mother, she was a pain in her's father's side. A burden as one would call it, one that would stick no matter how much she wished to be removed. She tried her best to be strong for both of them, but there were times it became to difficult to bear the weight alone. She wanted to be loved, for someone to be there and say it's okay. A wish for the hole in their family the mother had left; to simply be relieved, but found that to be wishful thinking. And in her home their many memories laid, without a welcoming future. The lack of sweet melodies and luscious scents of homemade meals, trapped in the past of their family story. All stored in an empty shell, hallowed by the place Emery called home. Life said the emotional strain wasn't enough for Emery. People became unethical and out of control, using her lack of inner beast as a pathway to release their problems. In their eyes she was nothing but a burden, a waste of breath, one who weighed close to nothing. This contradicted her mother who was known as an outstanding former warrior of the highest rank. A model to some of the strongest women in the world as many looked up to her. Her mother was a woman of power that had the courage to face her enemies freely, unafraid of dying in battle. And to onlookers, a woman like that should have a daughter just as great, but Emery would never follow in her footsteps. The reality serving as one of the main reasons everyone put her down. In the werewolf world, power was everything, status; important, and everyone had a role to play. Unless you didn’t have a wolf in which your role would no longer exist. And to them without a wolf it’s said you shouldn’t exist at all. “You might as well be human”. Humans which are weak prey. But is that really all Emery will amount to be?
