1 Mental Paitient and his Prophetic Dream
“I feel and see them, Dr. Fincher, Sir. Every night, I go through the same dark and misty alley, and once I reach the void-like portal, I hear screams of pain —” James choked as he retold his chilling nightmare. Thaleos could see the young man’s dry lips cracking as he mouthed each word. “I - I hear children crying, Mr. Thaleos. I hear loud laughter. Every time I look through that wretched portal, I can feel the blood splattering on me. I’m ugh —” The younger man cried out in sheer frustration. James looked too exhausted — he had large dark bags under his eyes and his blond hair lost its brilliant luster. “Feel free to share what you can, James. Just know that you don’t have to if you can’t yet, okay?” Thaleos said to the younger man who was near to tears. He offered the younger man his comfort object, which was a teal baby blanket. James told this story every day in their therapy sessions, and Thaleos tried different approaches to make sure that James would be comfortable enough to continue the story. After a week of trying, James would usually just stop there and pay for his session, then leave. “What about the accident, Dr. Fincher? The one I told you about the red motorcycle and the black pick-up truck. What should I do about that?” The older man remembered James talking about this accident, and he diagnosed this as part of his paranoia and anxiety. “James, as we’ve talked before. It’s common for patients with paranoia to dream about freak accidents. The first thing to remember is that your head’s just trying to make you overthink. Have you tried the exercises we’ve talked about?” Thaleos said. “Yeah, I did. But I think that these dreams are real, Mr. Thaleos. I’m scared of what’s going to happen to that old man. I saw his head roll off the street, for goodness’ sake! What should I do?” James frantically said with tears in his eyes. “Alright, James. If it makes you feel better, we can call the traffic patrol to make sure that they pay extra attention to that street, uh, where was it again?” The larger man said as he looked up the traffic patrol’s telephone number. “Near the old bank, by Howard Street,” James said while slightly calming down. Thaloes nodded his head and noted it down. “Going back to your dreams about the portal, have there been any improvements?” Thaleos asked while he was skimming through his notes. After a minute of full silence, James finally spoke up with a disturbed look in his eyes, “I-I did it, Dr. Fincher. I – I went inside the portal.” Thaleos’ eyes widened since this was the first time that they’ve ever gone beyond the “portal.” He flipped through his clipboard and noted down this improvement. Thaleos concluded from James’ case that these vivid nightmares stemmed from his grandmother locking him up inside their antique mansion’s cellar as a punishment. The Huberts were part of the old rich and they were known for being extremely secretive and dubious. “I – I saw...” The blond-haired man tried saying as he anxiously bit his fingernails. “James, it’s okay. If you need more tim—” James cut off Thaleos and nervously rambled on, “I saw dead bodies, Dr. Fincher. I saw how large powerful gods were floating around, and demons fighting t-these beast-like creatures. All of them killing every single person they see,” Thaleos couldn’t deescalate the situation fast enough, as James continued, “There was neither the sun nor any source of light at all, there were only fires. Thousands of burning buildings and smoked-out houses.” “Black-horned demons were laughing as they tossed people around and blew them up. It was an apocalypse. Mr. Thaleos, I —” Suddenly, James lost that crazed look on his face and broke down crying. Right at this moment, it was as if he was being driven to the brink of insanity. Thaleos did his best in comforting the younger man, but James was just in a constant state of stress and anxiety from repeating this story. “I know it’s no use seeing a psychiatrist, but I had to try.” James snuffled and gave Thaleos a grim smile. “I have to go now, Dr. Fincher. Thank you.” The blond man abruptly stood up and wiped his tears away using his sweater’s sleeve. Before Thaleos could even say anything else, the younger man hurried out the therapy room leaving the older brunet concerned and confused. He took off his metal glasses and scratched his five-o-clock shadow, one of his many habits when he was analyzing his patients. He pressed the call button to call his colleague and temporary assistant, and within half a minute, Ygritte knocked on the door. “What do you need, Dr. Fincher?” Ygritte kindly asked as she took out her pen and tiny notebook from her scrub’s pockets. “Hi Ygritte, can you check up on James every now and then. Tell him that he’s free to come back any time, and he doesn’t have to pay me anything.” Thaleos said in a hushed tone as he stood up and towered over the elfin-like Asian girl. “Sounds great, Dr. Fincher. He sounds genuinely scared of all these nightmares.” Ygritte replied in a sad hushed voice as she remembered seeing the pure terror in the young man’s blue eyes. “Yeah, this session kind of left him rattled.” He sighed and then proceeded to get rid of the kinks in his neck. Ygritte just stared at him with a shy smile, it was understandable why the other nurses kept raving on about the towering man’s-built figure and angled jawline. Try doing it for five years, Ygritte thought to herself. Nevertheless, she was still happy to have this kind and ridiculously sporty man as her friend. That would be enough. She bid Thaleos a small bye and the tanned man just playfully shooed her away, making her laugh.   ~ ~ ~   Thaleous’ Apartment 8:30 PM   Thaleos drowsily took off his brown trench coat and maroon scarf, and placed them on the coatrack near the apartment door Suddenly, a border collie appeared out of nowhere and pounced on him. He let out a chuckle as he petted his dog, Luna. She was one of the few pure things in this world that made him genuinely happy. “Good girl. I’ll get your food as soon as I put my judo clothes away.” He gave the black and white dog one last pet before going to his room. A few hours later, Thaleos finished eating his dinner and was ready to just sink into his memory foam mattress.   Today was just incredibly draining for him. For psychiatrists, this level of emotional fatigue was quite common, but today’s session just hit differently than the usual. He couldn’t explain it, but he just had this terrible feeling. As James told him his detailed nightmares, something felt off at how extremely terrified he was. Thaleos had patients who had severe cases of psychosis, and he’s seen cases where people would literally stab a family member because of paranoia. But James’ fear, anxiety, and helplessness were more similar to people who experienced extremely traumatic situations like civil wars or natural disasters. Thaleos tried shaking off these dreadful thoughts away, but he was left shuffling around his bed at 3:00 AM and still feeling incredibly disturbed. After a few more times of trying, he finally got a bit of sleep.   ~ ~ ~   The first thing Thaleos felt was walking on a soft field. He heard rushing water and tweeting birds. He was in a forest filled with age-old trees. He felt at peace. After a couple of seconds in silence, he heard a woman’s scream from a distance. He looked around and saw nothing but the same trees. Then he heard the scream again, this time, it was getting nearer. The sky started getting darker and the birds stopped chirping. After a few seconds of pure silence, a thunderstorm suddenly roared out. The woman started screaming repeatedly — as if being stabbed again and again. He turned his head towards the direction of the screaming and instead saw the river slowly shifting into a pool of blood. He quickly looked down on his feet and found the terrifying image of him stepping on ashes and small pieces of human bones. He was terrified, but before he could even run, a large lion with a snake-like tail flew over him. Thaleos just froze up as the creature flew down on the bloody river. In its claw-like paw was a dead young woman with her innards spilling out. No matter what he did, he just couldn’t look away. “It’s one of my dreams, Dr. Fincher.” Out of nowhere, James’ voice whispered to him behind his back. He turned around but couldn’t find James. “I’m up here, Dr. Fincher.” He turned his head up to look at one of the tree branches and found no one. He was confused. He was still anxious about the incident he witnessed, and hearing James wasn’t making things any better. “Not there, Dr. Fincher. Here.” James was suddenly sitting atop the fierce lion-eagle hybrid. The beast appeared to be okay with it — more than that, it looked like it was tamed to act calmly. James looked different. He looked less tired. “I came to say goodbye, Mr. Thaleos” The older man tried to say something back, but it was as if there was this invisible rock lodged inside his throat. “I’m tired and I think saying goodbye’s the best way to be happy again.” This was the first time Thaleos saw the younger man genuinely smiling. The background started shifting to its former peaceful version. “One last thing, Dr. Fincher, the journal.” Thaleos wanted to ask what journal he was talking about, but suddenly the beast’s eyes turned into a fierce red and his shackles started rising. “It isn’t supposed to be acting this way.” The smile on James’ face was immediately wiped out. Suddenly, the beast quickly tossed James upwards and opened its large mouth, exposing hundreds of sharp ragged teeth. As James was about to fall into the beast’s mouth, he screamed, “Help me, Dr. Fincher! Dr. Fin—" ~ ~ ~   “—cher! Dr. Fincher!” Thaleos woke up with a start, as he heard Ygritte calling out his name in a worried tone. “Dr. Fincher, are you alright? You’ve been dozing off since this morning.” Thaleos groggily looked back up at her, still in a daze. “It’s fine, Ygritte, I’m fine.” He replied while yawning out the last word. It’s been two weeks since he started having these dreams, and lately, the bad feeling was getting worse. Living as an orphan for 30 years raised him to always believe his gut feeling. He remembered the constant fear he had to live with while surviving in the streets. He had to always rely on his fighting skills and gut feeling to protect himself. “Dr. Fincher, maybe you should rest today. The bags under your eyes are just getting darker and darker. Go sleep it off while I hold the fort here.” Ygritte urged him as she saw that Thaleos was just forcing himself to stay awake. He gave a simple nod and stood up.   ~ ~ ~   As he got out of the hospital, he felt more at peace with the cool, yet sunny weather. He was thankful that his apartment was just five minutes away, he was ready to just collapse on his bed. Two streets away from his apartment and standing near a century-old bank, Thaleos was waiting for the traffic light to turn red. He took a quick look at his shoes and when he looked up, he saw James on the other side of the street. Just as he was about to raise his hand to say “Hi”, he noticed that James was intently glowering in a certain direction. He was attentively staring at a red moving motorcycle, that was about 15 meters away. He looked way worse than he did two weeks ago. It seemed like he hasn’t showered since then and the bags under his eyes almost occupied half of his face. Before the motorcycle passed through the crosswalk, James shifted his eyes and stared directly at Thaleos. In a split second, Thaleos heard a loud bang! Suddenly, there was this piercing sound that made him close his eyes in pain. When he looked at the source of the sound, the rusty vehicle collided with a black pick-up truck. The rider’s body was completely smashed up and he was surrounded by a pool of blood. After a few seconds of shock, everyone started screaming and panicking. They went straight to the scene of the accident, and the only people who stayed in the same position were James and Thaleos. Thaleos slowly looked up at James, bewildered. The younger man across the street slowly mouthed the words, “I told you it was gonna happen.”
