Bedtime Story
"Brawn, it's time to go to bed." Luna Floret Brio said with a smile as she tucked six years Brawn under the blanket on his large bed, big enough for five pups his age. "Please mum, I am not sleepy yet and I still want to wait for daddy." Brawn stared at his mum with pleading eyes. His brown eyes were fully dilated and his puppy-looking face made him appear cute. "It is already past bedtime. You know your dad doesn't like you staying up late." "Okay mum, but my bedtime story. . .please?" Brawn finally gave up the protest. Still wearing the big warm smile, Floret asked, "Which will it be today?" "The story you promised to tell me" Brawn beamed as he exclaimed with both hands up, "The story about great-grandad! Alpha Brio!" "Excellent choice of story!" Floret smiled, "And an excellent timing too." She sat close to his bed with her elbow resting beside his head and her face a few meters from his as she began her story. "Long ago, when an omicron still attacked the Grid pack land, Brio was a young twenty years old werewolf who was the son of the Grid Werewolf pack's Salutary. . ." "Mum, what is an omicron?" Brawn had never had of such word before. "An omicron is like a ghost form of a werewolf, not invincible though but very dark. It can only appear during the eclipse and it is every werewolf's greatest fear as it causes your wolf to shake and freeze with fear just by seeing it and omicrons never hesitate to kill a fearful werewolf. Omicrons can't be killed but they can be defeated." Floret explained to her little pup in the simplest way she could. He was still very little and could easily get confused. So she ensured she selected her words properly in order for him to get the picture. "Mum, do omicrons still appear during the eclipse?" Brawn was the inquisitive type and asked a lot of questions. "Hey! No spoiler! I can't tell you till the end of the story, dear." Floret said with a bigger smile, pulling his cheeks gently. Brawn raised himself a bit, almost to a sitting position, "Okay mum, carry on with the story." He did not want to fall asleep as the story went on. "Good boy!" Floret pulled his cheeks again gently with both hands, this time, shaking his head a little. "So one day," she continued, "Grandad Brio came back from a long training in the pack's combat school. He had just gotten his wolf the previous week, so he was undergoing training to understand how to get the most out of his wolf. "He met his house in smokes. He ran into the house to see his father dying in pain. Some mixture was in a bottle and there was a large hot liquid wolfbane on the floor and a greater portion covering his father's skin. His father had encountered an accident while doing his research. The wolfbane mixture had mixed with his father's blood as the hot mixture burnt his skin. His father was dying slowly in pain. . ." "Mummy, why does his father have wolfbane in his house and why was he boiling it?" Brawn popped another question up. His dad had shown him some wolfbane some days ago and had told him never to put it in his mouth because it was very poisonous to werewolves. He wondered why Brio's father should be boiling wolfbane to drink. Floret saw the confusion in Brawn's eyes so she took her time to slowly explain, "His father had been preparing some portions to see how to defeat the omicron as they were expecting an eclipse not long from then. He had gathered so many herbs together with the wolfbane with the aim of preparing something that would make the omicron disappear. That was why he had wolfbane in his house. . .so where did I stop?" "Brio saw his daddy dying in pain." Brawn reminded. "Yes, thank you dear for reminding me. You have been a good listener," she remarked, smiling once again. "So Brio ran to his father and kept telling his father not to die. Brio was so interested in his father not dying that he didn't notice another boiling portion his father was heating in a glass container which had overheated. It exploded, causing other inflammable to explode too. "Brio was caught up in the explosion, having large spills of different boiled portions all over him. The house was already on fire and–" "Oh my! He just lost his dad and now he is in an explosion. Poor Brio." Brawn was almost in tears. "The fluids had gotten into his blood. The anger he felt for his father's death and the research which resulted in his father's death, made him lose his mind. Brio rushed out of the burning house. Pack members were running around, looking for water to quench the fire. They had heard the explosion. "The portions burnt his skin and mixed with his blood causing Brio to lose his mind. Bro went crazy and shifted into a feral wolf, attacking them all. Pack members let their wolves out and tried to subdue him. But as they seemed to be making progress, something very strange occurred. . ." Floret paused to raise Brawn's curiosity. "What happened, mum? Another explosion? " Brawn asked with curiosity written clearly on his face. "Come on, Brawn, there wasn't an explosion ceremony going on." Floret teased Brawn whilst scattering his hair with her palms. "Then what was it, mum? please tell me." Brawn pleaded. "Okay, I'll tell you. "He started shifting again as one would when one was getting one's wolf for the first time. This time, it was his wolf getting a new structure. His wolf shifted painfully into a bigger brutal wolf. He was three times the size of any wolf and twice the length of any wolf. He was a wolf but in BEAST MODE! He was further wild and possessed extra werewolf abilities. In a space of ten minutes, he had killed five werewolves. He tore them up like rats. Pack members were already running to the pack house where the Alpha lived. The beast wolf chased after them, killing more werewolves. A single leap was equivalent to three leaps of the best werewolves. The beast wolf had a special ability to run on two limbs and also run on four limbs for greater coverage. "By the time they mind linked the Alpha, about thirty werewolves were in pieces. Alpha Bryan ordered a full attack on the beast wolf. And the pack warriors surrounded it, trying to distract the beast wolf so he won't attack them anymore. "The beast wolf took offence though and continued roaring until he saw a beautiful werewolf staring at him. She was the younger sister of the Beta. She had come to see her brother a few moments before the beast wolf approached the pack house. She had felt a strong connection with this beast wolf she couldn't help but stare. "The Beta seeing his sister staring at the beast wolf mind linked her to return home but she would not budge. So the beta shifted into his wolf to protect her but something happened. The beast wolf roared in a fiercer tone and landed in front of the Beta's sister, taking a stance with its four limbs firmly gripping the earth, like it was protecting the Beta's sister from everyone. "Everyone paused in surprise at the action of the beast wolf but Glint, the Beta's sister walked to the roaring beast wolf and touched him softly on the right fore limb saying, "it's fine, he is my brother." The beast wolf then lowered his face gently to her and she leaned hers on his saying gently, "It is going to be okay, I am here with you." and that was it! The terror by day was shifting back to a normal-sized wolf and then back to his human form lying naked on the ground. She quickly covered him up with her scarf while he looked at her smiling at him." "Yay!" Brio has found his mate!" Young Brawn, who did not fully understand the meaning of 'mate', was excited. He had heard his parents say it countless times when two werewolves of the opposite gender come together. "Wow! You are so brilliant, Brawn! She was his mate. But just immediately after Brio found his mate, he was arrested for the havoc he caused and after he had been tried by the pack's law, he was found guilty of the death of thirty werewolves and was to be sentenced to death. Since he did it in a feral mind, Alpha Bryan lightened his sentence by declaring him a rogue and asking him to leave the pack and his mate instead of the death sentence. So Brio left the pack and Glint wailed for days. . ." Luna Floret stopped to comfort her son who was now crying. She pecked him on his forehead and helped him wipe some tears off his face. "What happened to him after then, Mom?" Brawn asked wiping tears away from his eyes. Floret continued, "Days passed by, months went by and it was the solar eclipse. It came alongside its escort, THE OMICRON!. "This time, it appeared at the front of the pack house killing two pack warriors almost immediately. It passed through the wall and entered the pack house. Everyone froze in fear. Unfortunately, Glint was in the pack house that day. "Oh my! " Brawn whispered underneath his breath. "Luckily for Glint, Brio had sneaked into the pack with the intention of meeting her when she was alone. He had tailed her to the pack house. He was actually in hiding when the omicron appeared. He saw it enter the pack house after killing the two pack warriors around. "The thought of the omicron killing Glint made Brio run to the pack house without thinking of the death penalty he –a rogue – was to face for breaking into the pack house. All he could think of was Glint. Soon he was in the pack house, shifting into his wolf. Seeing the omicron standing before his beloved, Brio shifted to his beast form and confronted the omicron. This time, Brio's wolf did not quake or freeze in fear at the sight of the omicron, instead, the omicron gave a fierce cry like that of an evil spirit, taking many steps backwards and soon disappeared. "Maybe it was because it had never been confronted by any werewolf or maybe there was something in Brio that made it disappear but whatever it was, the omicron was gone before the end of the eclipse. Everyone marvelled at this, wondering what kind of wolf Brawn was that wasn't terrified by the omicron. Ever since then, no one saw an omicron again. "Alpha Bryan wanted to reward Brio for saving his life and saving the pack from danger so he offered Brio a chance to return to the pack but Brio meekly declined to say that he had no place in the pack. He simply asked the Alpha to let Glint leave with him back to his newly found family amongst the rogues. "Alpha Bryan consented and Glint went with Brio, back to his newly found family of lone wolves and rogues, who had chosen to submit under his authority. This made him a true Alpha because he didn't have to kill to gain the position. So he named his pack 'The blue moon pack'. That's the history of our pack. "The blue moon pack and the Grid pack have been good allies ever since then, teaming together against other enemy packs." Floret finally brought the story to an end. "I want to be big and strong like Alpha Brio when I grow old enough to become an Alpha. " Brawn wished. "You are, my dear. The bloodline of Alpha Brio was known to be stronger, bigger and faster than every other werewolf of their peers even to date. They are referred to as 'Brio Wolves' And you, my darling baby," Floret rubbed his right cheek, "are special." "Why?" "I and your dad are distant cousins from Brio's genealogy. So that makes you not only a Brio wolf but a Brio wolf with purer genes. . .Lucky you!" Floret informed Brawn, housing a healthy smile on her face and pressing her forefinger on his nose. "That means I am a triple changer like Alpha Brio!" Brawn concluded with conviction. He had done his little calculations and that was his best resulting conclusion. "I didn't see that coming." Floret laughed. Brawn wondered what was so hilarious in what he said. He folded his hands on his chest and gave a frown. "We have not had any triple changer after Alpha Brio." Floret filled her son in. She knew he did not know what he was saying. "Then I'll be the first." Brawn proclaimed. He bent his head and gave a signature smile. His hands were still folded. "Okay big guy." Floret laughed harder this time, so much that she had tears coming out of her eyes. Brawn sat on his bed, watching his mum laugh at him. He concluded that his mother was jealous of him. Suddenly his mum stopped laughing, she stood up immediately and seemed to be listening to something. It was her mate and husband, Alpha Flare Brio. He was telling her something through the mind link. Whatever it was, it didn't seem good and her face distorted in horror as she listened. Immediately, she grabbed Brawn, pulling him up saying, "Brawn, we have to leave now! " "Why mum, what is the problem?" Brawn did not understand why she said they had to leave his bedroom. She was the one who convinced him to go to bed. She just concluded his bedtime story and was asking him not to sleep but leave his room with her? And why did she look so horrified? What was going on? "I'll explain later, let's leave this place quickly!" Floret was clearly uneasy. Sweat was beginning to break out from her forehead. "Mum, I'm the special one, the only existing triple changer. I am not afraid of anything. Tell me now. I want to know." Brawn was very confident he could handle anything, after all, he was 'special'. Floret stared at him with a mixed feeling of surprise and anger. She did not have time for his stubbornness. She wanted to jack him up so he would know how serious she was but then, a loud chaotic noise was heard afar off which seemed to be approaching. Floret turned to Brawn with a stern face, "Do you want to die? There is no time for this!" she said with no trace of jokes on her face. She grabbed him and made for the window. Brawn did not put up further fights as soon as he heard his mother ask him if he wanted to die. His mother had never spoken to him in such a manner. The tone of her words, the expression on her face and the approaching terrifying noise announced to him that it was not his daddy he was going to meet but something else. He perceived there was serious trouble. Every thought of him being a triple changer and a Brio wolf immediately died a natural death. Now he was scared. "Brawn, Jump." His mother told him, pushing him roughly to the window. "But —" He couldn't complete his statement because his mother was now pushing him out. As soon as his feet hit the ground, he looked up to see if his mother was coming with her but instead, he heard her scream, a loud guttural scream filled with agony.
